Is short hair affordable in times like these?

I like so many grew my hair during lockdown and then after I couldn't really afford hairdressers so trimmed it myself but I am sick of it and think I want short hair.
However I can't really justify a trim every 6-8 weeks at a hairdresser. Grrrrr
Barbers here don't seem to do women's cuts.
I'm scared of Supercuts.

Should I invest in clippers?

I would gear up for Supercuts. Luckily I go to a walk in unisex barber and he does a great dry cut for £8 with a £1 tip it is a hassle free experience. Both men women and children go in. Or you could ask around for dry cut prices in salons. I resent forking out for somebody to wash my own hair!

I used to trim my own fringe during the pandemic but it needs thinning each time which I cannot do as it then looks bulky and odd.

It might be affordable to some but it's irrelevant because they're not paying your bills. Look at the cost of maintaining the haircut you want and do your own sums. Or learn to DIY it.

I go to the barber's for £16 every 6 weeks. Says men's cuts but they've never not wanted my money.

I have short hair and have been thinking the same thing- but I love it sooo much. I have pushed to cutting it every 12 weeks- although that’s longer than I want to go it’s not too bad, and swapped to a slightly cheaper hairdresser than my old one was- still not cheap though.
Not sure I’m brave enough to try the barber- love those prices though!

Ring around the barbers There may be one happy to do it
Much the same style as a male cut
I have very short hair cut every six weeks so I do understand
It's my " luxury"

Brillenbar47 · 11/08/2022 18:48

A barber can't refuse to cut your hair because you are female - that is sex discrimination 101. But of course you might not feel comfortable going to a place where you need to say something like that to get your hair cut!

CharlotteSt · 11/08/2022 21:14

It's a very good question!

I have a fairly short cut but I had an unexpected pay rise so have earmarked the money for guilt-free regular cuts (I don't colour), eyebrow threading and file and polish for my toes.

SweetPetrichor · 11/08/2022 21:29

I do my own short back and sides. I clip the sides and back to a #1 and have been leaving the top to grow longer. I refuse to pay for something I can do myself easily!

imnottoofussed · 11/08/2022 21:39

I get a dry cut every 4 weeks £10 a pop. Also due my own probably every 8 weeks. Much cheaper than what I was paying for my longer hair cut and colour.

MissyB1 · 11/08/2022 21:52

I have short hair that needs cutting every six weeks, can’t grow it as it grows out not down!!
I don’t have manicures or eyebrows done or any other kind of pampering, so I’m going to carry on having the haircuts.

eeyoredebbie · 11/08/2022 22:05

Could you ask on Facebook or community page for a mobile hairdresser? Mine charges £7 for a trim and fringe. I am in Yorkshire so possibly cheaper than “down south” tho lol

PiggySue · 12/08/2022 10:18

Well thanks to the prompts from you I tried a few barbers and found one that does women's haircuts Yay!
Now to build up the bravery and go from shoulder length to crop......

I have long hair down to bra strap length but have been considering having it all chopped off and colour taken out of it. It is too hot for long hair ATM. What age do others get dye taken out? I think mine would be beyond grey so white now.

girlmom21 · 12/08/2022 10:29

Super cuts are super expensive and their cuts aren't great

PiggySue · 12/08/2022 10:52

@caringcarer I stopped dyeing mine in my late 40s so around 10 years ago. It's still salt and pepper.
