Hiking skirt

I'm looking for a skirt for hiking in (without shorts underneath). Obviously you can hike in any skirt but it would be great to fine one in that sort of waterproofish material that shorts are made of. I can't find one anywhere! Do they still exist? So much more practical than shorts.

I sort of feel there's a gap in the market for a businesslike knee length skirt with pleats for movement and pockets, the kind of thing ladies might have worn in the 30s/40s . A kilt I guess!

To be fair quite a few of the skorts seem to just have stretchy cycling shorts as the under layer that could easily be cut out.

Try Mountain Warehouse, although there ranges change regularly, so you have to see what’s on offer.

As for those saying “shorts”, the OP has specifically asked for a skirt, l don’t do shorts myself. If someone asks for directions to the British Museum you don’t tell them how to get to the V&A.

This. I don’t understand why the OP has to justify her clothing choices, especially to other women!

Rohan used to do some great practical hiking skirts, same fabric as the trousers, extra cargo pocket as well as hip pockets, belt loops and a belt. Available in a couple of lengths, knee and calf length if I remember correctly. I think they were a line or with a kick pleat.

Just checked they don't seem to have them now, all the skirts and dresses are a bit fashion rather than practical. Might find one second hand I suppose.

No, but it's on my list of things to try! Is it tricky to get the hang of?

It sometimes takes a minute for your brain to convince your bladder to let go while standing! Main thing is lock your knees and stick your bum out like a duck, then the wee doesn't run down your legs.

StarlightLady · 05/08/2022 09:43

@FlatWhiteExtraHot - Thank you! Personally, I tend to almost live in dresses for around 9-10 months of the year; I love my dresses. But if someone is asking about trousers (for example), I don't suggest they buy a dress.

Sheffieldissunny · 05/08/2022 10:36

This one is a bit expensive (imo) but looks comfy for walking in and has pockets www.pocketsforwomen.co.uk/product/23321/sophia-mini-skirt

Patagonia dresses are your friend. I’ve just spent a swimming holiday wearing nothing but, and have also walked the Pembrokeshire coast path with my swim bikini underneath for dips.

TorviShieldMaiden · 05/08/2022 13:56

I was suggesting OP didn’t wear skirts, but as she mentioned stripping off for a wee. I was previously someone who took my whole trousers off to pee outside. A friend then told me the knee squat way and it was life changing!

If your reason for wanting a skirt is changing and peeing then you could just buy a cheap rain kilt and pop it on when you need to. They're pretty cheap and fold up really small

On a skirt note I found this - its mens so it would depend on whether or not you're too small for a men's small but seems to fit the bill pretty well at a sensible price

Snag who do tights now do clothes. They have a variety of skirts.
They have pockets and they have way more sizes for a variety of shape of person. Might be worth looking there.
I prefer walking in a skirt but if it's hot, I like a chub rub short underneath to reduce the rubbing. I'm a size 10 person so not the usual chub target market.

Thanks! I've tried Decathlon but they only had dresses - which were nice but not as practical.

The Drcathlon hiking dress - the green patterned one - is absolutely fabulous

love it, love it, love it

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 12/08/2022 17:27

(the other colours seem to be in a shiny thin cheap looking fabric)

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 12/08/2022 17:27

It has zip up pockets and washes and dries a dream
