Help me find a dress for my mum

I'd like to buy my lovely mum a really nice dress, but haven't got a clue where to look! She's 70 but looks younger, 5ft 6, size 12/14, small chest and prefers higher necklines, she'd want something that covered her bingo wings maybe angel sleeve.

So far I've come up with the Elowen or Boyd from LKBennett, but I know she would prefer something machine washable if possible ... Please give me some pointers for brands to start looking at ☺️ many thanks !

Nobody’s child and M&S both have a lot of dresses in a similar style (much lower price range though).

This one is nice, but there’s many other styles/colours if you don’t like the green.

Thankyou !
I think I wanted it to be something she wouldnt buy for herself so that's why I'd started with LKB / whistles, but of course everything up there is dry clean only. And everything washable is more likely to be in her radar / price range already.
When it comes to it the 'special' aspect is more important than the washable, I think.

Roman Originals and Phase Eight have some lovely dresses

Moon22 · 04/08/2022 09:04

Is it for a special occasion or day to day wear? Do you want a summer dress or more of an all rounder?

GettingStuffed · 04/08/2022 16:03

Patra silk patra.com/category/women/dresses I have a couple and they're really good quality

HuntingoftheSnark · 04/08/2022 16:24

My mother is 92 and wears a lot of Seasalt dresses and skirts - she says they machine wash very well. The sleeves are fine and if they're not high enough in the neck, she has a selection of really nice scarves.

HuntingoftheSnark · 04/08/2022 16:25

Oh sorry - possibly not special enough though! She has a Jigsaw dress too - also machine wash.

Voucher OP. And suggest you go with her and have lunch out.

@labourisboring
Have you looked at Hobbs? I have tried to add a link for a couple of their dresses but not having much success.
How about the Gianna Sik Floral or Cressida fit and flare?

HelebethH · 04/08/2022 17:05

@labourisboring
Or Caroline silk floral
Bella floral print satin
Both in their clearance sale

labourisboring · 04/08/2022 17:40

Thanks everyone ! Lovely suggestions... The Gianna from Hobbs is just what I think she'd like, but loving the idea to take her for lunch a make a day of it x

Wyse dresses are about £200-300 and most are washable. They have a shop on Carnaby Street so you could have a mooch around Liberty as well if you made a day of it (and I would as they had slightly odd sizing). You could also try Me & Em on South Molton Street.

Hels20 · 04/08/2022 21:34

Cefinn or The Fold? Some of their dresses are washable. To be honest - even if it doesn’t say machine washable - a lot of stuff is…

take a look on Net A. Porter and Matches and put in a price range and see what comes up!

LocalHobo · 04/08/2022 21:39

I think a 'pretty' floral print can be aging if you are not in the first flush of youth. Geometric, plains or the print@FlorianImogen suggests is more flattering.

BasiliskStare · 04/08/2022 22:06

Would this suit - says dry clean but I have had a dress from them and put it on a really delicate wash and it was fine www.hobbs.com/product/deanna-dress/0222-5794-9045L00-NAVY-MULTI.html#cgid=new-dresses&is=true&sz=60&start=0&isSecondPage=false&pid=0222-5794-9045L00-NAVY-MULTI&pos=24

Wallis or Kaleidoscope

goingtotown · 04/08/2022 23:01

Take her shopping & let her choose, I wouldn't want someone to choose a dress for me.
