Hair Extensions - how often do you wash your hair

If you have hair extensions, how often do you wash your hair / the extensions? Is there a way to wash just the top section of your own hair without washing the extensions (though obviously would still get wet)?

@Talkaholic do you use a shower cap on days your not washing your hair? Or are they okay getting wet, so long as your not washing them?
