How can I cut my own hair neatly

Sadless · 21/07/2022 20:42

Any advice my hair is half way down my back it's full of split ends. I would want to get rid of at least 4 inch but I can't afford to go hairdressers so I am going to try myself and if it fails just put it a ponytail.
Any tips on best way of doing it

Thanks
Sal

Pony tail cut.
put hair in a pony on top of your head- make sure it’s smooth. Then pop another bobble at the length you want to cut. The snip below that.
gives layers and a pretty neat cut. I’ve been doing it for yours.
been braver and will cut my fringe too 🙂

Look at some YouTube tutorials
my mate cut mine over lockdown and it was as good as hairdresser
but I’ve got a simple hairstyle which is updo most of the time anyway but split and dry ends need to go !
I think it’s a good idea to buy some haircutting scissors too, I’m not sure I’d attempt it myself because of the back that you can’t judge

Wouldn't recommend the above unless you're happy with layers.

Loads of tutorials on YouTube on how to cut your own hair, look for somebody with a similar hair type to you

I will have a look and would definitely need a proper pair of scissors. It's got that long I can't not have a ponytail in it.

Thanks

It has to be sectioned off you can’t just chop into a big chunk of hair, definitely look into YouTube tutorials

Search for videos on YouTube. Brad Mondo has some good tutorials for the ponytail method.

Apologies if it's not an option OP but does your local college have a training salon attached to it? At the one near me you can get a wet cut for £6.

Sorry if it's no help, just thought I'd mention in case you'd not thought of it.

I do mine.

Put into bunches just under your ears. Make sure you have not left out any strands at the back. Gently pull the bands down bit by bit until both bands are at the level you want to cut, then ....... CUT! Chop the lump of hair off just below the bands.

That's it - I do it roughly every 6 weeks - takes 5 minutes. Hair finishes up graduating to very very slightly longer at the back, but does not bother me.

I bought a very cheap hair cutting kit which is basically a clamp/clip that you put on your hair to give you a straight line. It has a spirit level on it so you can see when it is straight but I found this too awkward so just guessed when it was straight enough. I didn’t use scissors as I found I was more likely to go wrong so borrowed DH’s clippers and just went straight across. It’s worked a treat as I just have straight hair with no layers or fringe to worry about. I’ve also had DH do it for me when I wanted it slightly shorter and he managed to not cock it up!
