What sorts of glasses are in style?

I need new glasses, I'm still wearing rimless ones from about 2012 . . . What sort of glasses are reasonably stylish at the moment and not likely to date too quickly?

I am very fair with a narrow oval face so the big black glasses trend (which I think is over now?) makes me look like a pair of glasses on a body. (Like the glasses birds in Alice in Wonderland). I'm in my mid 30s.

I wear glasses all the time so it's a big part of the impression I make, and I'm not keen on having multiple pairs - I find it hard to adjust.

Suggestions gratefully received!

Not helpful (at all) but it’s currently all the rage for urban early 20s to wear huge Deirdre Barlow 80s horrors…

NotMeNoNo · 06/07/2022 15:18

Young people I know are wearing round gold wire frames.

Yodaisawally · 06/07/2022 15:18

I've never considered what's on trend but what suits my face, that might be a better angle to go in at!

Daisytomhope · 06/07/2022 15:37

I've been today to buy new glasses. I felt I had little choice as there were lots of gold, brown and glitter which are not me.
I always go for style of frame I find comfortable (especially bridge of nose), then shape(like you I can't wear big glasses) and colour I like /will suit the clothes I wear. Although I usually end up buying designer frames I don't go for some just because they are on trend.

My son's just chosen some not-quite-round metallic frames. I like them. I'm still wearing plastic ones but I think I'll go back to metallic too next time.

Apart from a couple of very broad rules - not too large cos I've got a small face, and not black cos I'm pale - I don't worry too much about all the suiting you business. Glasses always look weird when you first try them. Always. And especially if they're a new style. Whenever I change my frames I hate them at first and think I've ruined my life, then I get used to them, and then I start to like them.

According to my optician half rimmed glasses are making a come back
lenses are rounded and getting bigger
I have just swapped my traditional raybans for these and am keeping the others as sunglasses

Thanks all

Yes I've seen the Deirdre Barlow horrors!

It's a balance for me of getting something that both suits me and doesn't look too dated / unique. I have a knack of picking the oddest frames in the shop.

I'm thinking biggish lenses, light brown frames, rounded styles, are what might both work on me and bring me into 2022 😀

Sure you don't fancy channelling ol' Sexy Specs?

No, are half-rimmed coming back? I like the rims to disguise the bags under my eyes.

catfunk · 07/07/2022 18:56

I would go to a good, independent designer opticians (not specsavers, they always try to flog me kylie frames) and try loads on

Yes me too. Big glasses look ridiculous on me as do round ones and those exaggerated side swept ones.

I pick the shape to suit my face and the colours to go with what I wear. Generally I manage to pick the most expensive frames in the shop...

I have branched out from my usual safe peach and gold frames to a pair of green and yellow half rimmed metallics

ImAvingOops · 07/07/2022 20:10

Your choice might be hampered by your prescription. I have very poor eyesight and so need small frames because even when thinned down, they are too chunky in a large frame.
I think it's best to get what suits your face - try on lots of different shapes and you'll know when you find the right ones.

ToadiesCouzin · 07/07/2022 20:13

All the cool kids at school are wearing either round gold metal frames, or very light coloured/clear quite roundish plastic frames. All which would like they'd suit you quite well, so you shouldn't have a problem finding stylish frames.

SummaLuvin · 07/07/2022 20:25

metal frames and paler plastic frames. oversized but not huge. I haven't noticed half rims, but am not always the most observant.

tokyotea · 07/07/2022 22:25

I had new ones recently and went for quite round metal frames. They're quite large and I have a smaller round face but I think they suit me and look cool.

FarFarFarAndAway · 07/07/2022 22:28

The trend towards bigger glasses is a disaster for people with high prescriptions/poor sight as the bigger you go out, the thicker the lens, mine are twice the size of the current frame anyway. Fashion has to come second for me because I just can't have big lenses, whether they are trendy or not. Go to a good independent optician and ask their advice and take your time.

ConfusedParticle · 07/07/2022 22:54

OP you sound similar to me, face wise.
I wear round harry potter style glasses with slender frames, not to everyone's taste but I love them and they suit my look.
I don't care what's on trend though as I loathed the letterbox shape that has been everywhere for years. It always seemed to make everyone's faces angry or severe.

Whatever kids are doing is not of interest to me, but it's good to see new styles around now. I would opt for something that is perfect for you, with light frames and not too heavy or colourful. I think a fair complexion and small features suit delicate specs personally, unless you are going for the wacky look.

I have a lot of restrictions too mainly due to being -12 (no metal, no rimless, moulded nose rest not the little button type, not too big, not too wide) it's a PITA. I just take my prescription around every optician in town and keep trying them on and taking selfies. Luckily I wear contacts too so I can see what I look like in the glasses. There are about 5 opticians in my town, if I have no luck there I go to the nearest big town too.

concernedguineapig · 08/07/2022 08:57

These are Kate spade, I quite like them.

I have similar issues. I’m -10 with retinal issues and need varifocals. I am pretty much limited to certain styles.

Afterfire · 08/07/2022 09:11

I think there’s a trend to wear statement specs at the moment - gold metal round 90s type ones or big 80s Deidre B type ones, regardless of whether they actually “suit” someone’s face or not.
