Dress me for my son’s graduation… please!!

Hi, I’m looking for a dress for my son’s graduation. I’m 56, 5’3 and apple shaped, so this task is not easy.

My legs are good, but my top is short, so low cut things show my boobs.

I like sleeves which aren’t tight. I’m not keen on very structured dresses, but am open to suggestions.

Can you help, oh stylish ones?!

The John Lewis website has a great filter option of necklines, sleeves etc.
Huge range of brands and prices too.

What about something like this OP. Do you like this style?

I would pick something out of your wardrobe you already like wearing. It isn't a dressy occasion and just a casual dress or smarter trousers and top is fine.

If you want something new there are loads of summer dresses in shops at present and for once even M and S had some nice linen style shift dresses/tunic dresses.

I wore the Hush Kensington shirt dress to my DC’s graduation. It was very comfortable and I felt good in it. I’ll find a link, hang on…

Well that was a fail.

That's a really lovely dress @ShirleyJackson but I'm short and a bit apple-y and I think It would look very frumpy on me sadly.

I would avoid navy or black as you'll just blend into your son's academic gown.

Also nothing that will look dated in a couple of years as I assume you'll have the photos in pride of place!

Finally, graduation halls can be hot! Wear something cool.

ShirleyJackson · 07/07/2022 07:06

Hmm, @Paq - point taken.

What about something a-line, like this one from Boden?

That's beautiful, and it has pockets!

HOBBS, have several A line and sheath dresses you might like.

Womenandwomenfirst · 07/07/2022 15:01

Hobbs petite is your friend. I am your doppelgänger from your description and I wore a Hobbs silky shirt dress to ds’s graduation. Some of the non-petite are ok, but for waist position petite fits best. Sale at the moment, and also eBay is worth a look depending on budget

Thanks all! I’ve ordered two dresses from Hobbs- good call!!
