Baukjen - who’s still buying

MsDastardley · 04/07/2022 19:29

I love the ethos of Baukjen, and have bought lots from them over last few years. I’ve just been browsing their new season stuff, and once again disappointed with their offerings which are a rehash of the same styles, tiered dresses and blouses with drippy little ties at the neck. Colours have been odd too. There have been a couple of exceptions, but they have been far too long for me and I am average height.

I don’t think I’ve bought anything from them this year. There’s a concession in my local John Lewis, and stock there doesn’t seem to be moving.

I am trying to make ethical and sustainable purchases, but it’s not easy. Has anyone got any recommendations.

No, I always have a look and they always have one nice shirt.

I used to buy their jersey dresses as they were thick, fitted and washed like a dream. They haven’t made any of those in years… have switched to Manners London now.

I used to really love it but style wise it's going the way of Boden and I can't stand that every Instagram influencer seems to be sent the whole season's collection for free while everyone else has to cough up.

TreePoser. Ha, that’s what I find!

The jersey was nice. I’ve still got a couple of skirts and some Neath pants and they look new. Thanks for the link, I might order a pencil skirt😀

I bought a dress from there but it didn't suit me so I sent it back. It took well over 4 weeks from sending it back for them to refund me so I won't be buying from them again online.

Don’t get me started on the influencers, it puts me right off 😬. Well it would do if there was anything I wanted to buy!

I've bought two tops and two dresses. All stunning. But since then I've found nothing else I like. Maybe in the autumn?

I’d forgotten about that. The waits for refunds is ridiculous, although someone on here said if you contacted them with tracking number they would sort out quicker. I don’t know if it’s improved as not bought anything this year.

Fingers crossed! They have had some lovely things, and I’ve found the quality to be good. I just feel they’ve lost their way slightly and are repeating styles and not moving on. I feel like a disloyal friend bitching about them 😩

I used to like Baukjen, and have bought bits and pieces over the years, but feel they've lost their way. They used to have quite a small collection, and I could guarantee to find several things there each season, but in the last few years the collection has grown massively and everything looks the same! Loads of floral dresses with frills and tiers, even just a simple shirt dress turned out to have gathered shoulders which made my already wide ones look like a sumo wrestler, odd colours - lots of pale yellow at one point - and a lot of identikit leisure wear. An odd mix of flowery and overly fussy clothes, or stuff that is just yawn. Also not had good experience of their returns/refunds. I like the eco credentials but, if you're charging customers £140 for 'greencash' knitwear, I'd like some reassurance that it's made from actual wool, rather than 'recycled fibres', which could be anything.

MsDastardley · 04/07/2022 21:22

stringbean totally agree. They also seem to keep selling lots of old stock, it goes in the sale, then back again at full price. I’ve not had good experiences of the recycled knitwear. I returned a greencash jumper as it felt totally limp, like all the life had been taken out of it. I buy cashmere from Brora in the sale for not much more

I’ve not bought anything from Baukjen since pre-pandemic and I used to love them too! Everything just looks so ‘fussy’. I can buy fussy clothing anywhere, the market is saturated with that kind of thing. I’d like to buy classic clothing from Baukjen but there’s very little that meets that brief now!

A-Day www.thisisaday.com might be worth a look. I've not bought anything from them yet but they offer clean lines reminiscent of Baukjen of old, and they have a sustainability ethos too

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 05/07/2022 07:00

I am short so Baukjen rarely works for me. Still, I used to get a few basics from them, but lately I find their colours and patterns to be bloody awful, and oh my god so overpriced!!

KatharinaRosalie · 05/07/2022 13:12

Just looked at the website - I am not sure who is buying, women in Surrendered Wife movement? The Amish? What happened, I always used to buy a few simple but elegant items every sale, but now it all looks like 1970s housecoats.

Valkirie · 05/07/2022 20:56

Elegance, now superseded by billowing fabric and flounces. What a shame.

grownup2 · 05/07/2022 21:06

Don't know if it's sleek enough for you, OP, but I remain impressed with www.wearethought.com for quality, wearability and eco credentials, without the frump. I have just bought a khaki Jersey tunic with wide front tie and it is beautifully cut and finished.

They obviously aren't doing as well because Boundary Mill has started stocking them (they buy seconds & old stock cheap to sell off), if anyone is local to one of their stores

Yes I like thought! I just wish they did more blouses and shirts I can wear to work.

As for baujken I was nearly tempted as they put a leaflet in the post about their 60% off sale but last time I ordered I had to return everything and it took ages for the refund to come through.
