Thermal underwear and nightwear

Can anyone suggest some good brands for thermal underwear for an older female, (not my mum) mid-seventies, to wear indoors in a cold house. Already purchased:

Decent sheepskin slippers
A real Oody
Electric fluffy throw (DD has one, brilliant and cheap to run)

I'm now thinking of thermal socks/fingerless gloves, t-shirts, maybe some headwear. Nothing too outdoors-y. Just nice, not-too-bulky things you can happily wear inside. Thank you

My mum wouldn't be able to deal with an Oodie, and would prefer something lighter, and with a zip as she doesn't have mobility for over the head type items. UGG type boots

M & S do some ultra warm thermal tops that seem pretty good. Heatgen or something.

LittleSockOfHorrors · 03/07/2022 21:57

Yes, you can get the ordinary thermals in M&S with the little holes in (pontinelle or something similar it's called) and the heatgen which is like a base layer. So you can wear it instead of a T-shirt for example.

Wearing a hat in the house is a game changer. Thinsulate are a good brand.

I got a great beret from John Lewis last winter that was thin and warm. I'll see if I can find a link.

SavoyCabbage · 03/07/2022 22:00

It was this one but they had about 15 colours in the winter. Mine was reduced as well.

My grandmother used to swear by these - they're long sleeved wool thermal vests, which she used to wear for about 9 months of the year:

There is a catalogue ( also online ) called Damart , they do lots of thermal clothes / nightwear / underwear . You might have to wait for the autumn winter season to come out.

Uniqlo's HeatTech UltraWarm leggings are fab under trousers; light and not bulky. They are easy to pull on if a person has limited mobility, e.g. sitting down. Wash and dry in a trice.

I'm wearing some now in a very chilly Melbourne winter.

Aldi regularly have long-sleeved merino tops in their specials. Ignore the sporty aspect, they look fine as underwear.

Just clocked! Hello SavoyCabbage, hope you're well.

SavoyCabbage · 04/07/2022 07:08

Hellos @echt !

Yes, all fine. We've been back five years now - my oldest who was just five when we met is eighteen now and going to university in September. I can hardly believe it. We haven't ruled out never moving back but I'm glad we came back. Hope you and your dd are well.

echt · 04/07/2022 10:48

All good here. I'm retired from teaching now (and loving it!!) and DD is working after university. We're both going to the UK later this year for the first visit in six years. Now I think of it, also the first time on a plane in six years.✈

Thank you very much.

I have gone with Granny's advice @stringbean and bought that exact one and also some other of the wool thermals. What a great website: real wool and also made in the UK (Lux Lux)

@CinnamonJellyBeans - My Granny lived in Yorkshire in a stonebuilt house with big attic/cellar and no heating above the ground floor. She was made of strong stuff but always said how warm these vests kept her Smile. I hope they provide the same warmth for your friend.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 28/07/2022 01:00

The Lux Lux stuff is lovely: so soft. A great recommendation. I wanted to get some for my own mum too, but their sizes start at 14, so I have also bought a load of merino wool base layers from the sale in Mountain Warehouse.

Thermal tights by M&S are fabulous. I swear by them.

I would recommend wrist warmers and ankle warmers by Turtledoves. I love mine. They have 40% off at the moment.
