I've just had a ring made and it's come out rather different than what I was expecting! I actually kind of like the uniqueness of what they've done, but I can't decide if they've just done a poor job. I know that I could ask them to change it because it's definitely not what I asked for, but I'm emigrating in 2 weeks and it would probably be more trouble than it's worth!
Here is what I asked for and what I got...

There are quite big gaps between the diamonds, I'd have expected them to be set close together as in the first picture. Have you told them it's not how you expected?

ApolloandDaphne · 02/07/2022 07:08

The first one looks like the diamonds are in an illusion setting whereas yours are very individual. Did you give them the stones and detail exactly what you wanted?

I did say I was expecting the stones to be a bit closer together. They said something about changing it, but I don't think they could do it before I move overseas and it's just something else I don't want to think about.

I supplied the sapphire and the photo. I suppose I just thought it would look exactly like the photo!

The sapphire is absolutely beautiful. It might help to look at your ring without the pic you wanted and ask yourself if you like it.

Gensola · 02/07/2022 07:18

This happened to me with my first engagement ring. They had sample styles in and I chose one, gave them the diamonds and then when the ring came back it was quite different, much chunkier and less delicate with squared off claw settings. I asked about it and they gave a vague excuse. I never really liked that ring - I’d get it changed if you can.

Thingsthatgo · 02/07/2022 07:20

It's tricky to see from your photo because it's a bit blurred, but it looked like the diamonds share claws.
Did you talk about the size of the diamonds before going ahead? I wonder if the gaps are there so the jeweller can get away with smaller diamonds.
If it is not what you want I would ask them to fix it. They can send you photos of the new design before you approve it and then they can post it to you fully insured.

NewYorkLassie · 02/07/2022 07:20

It will be a bugger to keep clean with those gaps.

KangarooKenny · 02/07/2022 07:21

It doesn’t look right to me, and it’s not what you asked for.

Diplidocus4 · 02/07/2022 07:31

Not sure if it's the photo but the sapphire setting looks off/wonky ? The underneath is visible on one side more than the other ? Maybe it's the photo angle ....
also think that the diamonds will catch/pull on things - hair/clothing ?

Anonmousse · 02/07/2022 07:40

The first one looks like a usual trefoil setting where the stones are touching, and the width of the 2 diamonds is similar to the width of the sapphire. What they've made is very gappy and not sure why it's been interpreted that way? Also it looks like there is a gap where the shank (band) joins the head (diamonds and stones) which looks different from the first image.

If you don't like it I would ask for it to be changed but I think the timescale would be tight if you want it before you leave.

No that's just the angle, there's no wonky-ness in "real life".

I've been wearing it and trying to decide how I feel about it. I have always liked unusual things and it does look unusual! But I'm not sure if I'm trying to talk myself into being happy with it. I don't know all that much about jewellery and I don't know if it looks rubbish!

ComfyChairPose · 02/07/2022 07:47

I'm not a jeweller (but i used to work in a very ordinary jewellery shop)

But I would not be happy with that, the gaps change the look of the ring.

Flapjack637 · 02/07/2022 07:48

We’re you on a budget meaning the diamonds had to be smaller? I don’t think I’ve ever seen small diamonds set like that but I’m not a jeweller and don’t see many rings.
It really isn’t what you asked for OP. How disappointing.

clippety clop · 02/07/2022 07:53

If it doesn't bring you joy change it. I'd consider having the diamonds removed all together.

CaptainBeakyandhisband · 02/07/2022 08:02

It’s not really that similar to the photo shown - the ring profile itself looks very different, the overall finished piece has a much chunkier feel. That might be fine, depending on your style and whether you like it, but if you don’t you would be perfectly reasonable to query it. What discussion did you have about the band and the setting?

SpringIntoChaos · 02/07/2022 08:08

I actually prefer your ring OP...but it's not my ring, it's yours! If you are not happy then absolutely get them to change it...you'll be wearing it daily, you need to love it!

TitInATrance · 02/07/2022 08:13

I’ve also had a ring remade which came out completely different, ended up having it done again after a couple of years. Even the band of yours is different, the one in the first photo is heavier and not tapered to the stone - it depends how you feel about it but ime it doesn’t do the stone justice

hopeishere · 02/07/2022 08:20

There's a lot of claw as well. As a pp says is it because they were using smaller diamonds?

daisypond · 02/07/2022 08:20

I think the diamonds are too far apart. They’re not in line with the sapphire, which those in the first photo are, so you get a smooth outline overall. They should be closer together. It’s not that they are too small per se.

Anonmousse · 02/07/2022 08:24

I don't think the size of the diamonds should make a difference. If anything, if they are smaller they should fit more neatly next to it, and be secure with shared claws. However if it had to be done differently for any reason, the OP should have been told beforehand

GiltEdges · 02/07/2022 08:28

I wouldn't be at all happy with that. My engagement ring is a very similar style to your first picture.

Plump82 · 02/07/2022 08:31

I'm studied Jewellery at uni and wouldn't be happy with this.
They've used premade settings by the looks of it which is cutting corners and why everything looks so far apart. It's also quite a cheap way of doing it. Especially if it's silver. Looking on Kernowcraft the setting for the sapphire would probably only be about £6.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/07/2022 08:35

Gosh, I'm quite shocked at how different that is. I'd definitely want that to be changed.

Fuckitydoodah · 02/07/2022 08:38

I'm not a jeweller but I don't think that is satisfactory. They've obviously used the wrong setting/claws for the diamonds. I can't see how the size of them would make any difference either. I think things will catch in between the diamonds if its left as it is and ultimately I don't think you're entirely happy with it.
