Curly hair care for men

And I specify men only as it is my 16 year old ds and he is not going to do anything faffy, and also has much shorter hair than long curly haired women in general although it is maybe 8" long on top.
He has suddenly decided that he actually wants to embrace his curls (3a I think, possibly b) and needs some help transitioning from frizz ball to what will probably be ringlets if his fathers hair is anything to go by (DH never did anything to his hair, but had thick hair which naturally formed ringlets if left damp wheras ds has my fine but loads of it hair which is a bit wilder).
Any words of advice? He currently has a tendency to look like Robert Smith, just thinner and younger and it is prom on Friday

I’ve not got experience with mens hair but on my shortish wavy/curly hair scrunching in a gel works a treat. Dries crunchy but you can scrunch it out once dry and it keeps the curls as it dries. A satin pillow case works very well too, doesn’t frizz the hair so all I need to do is scrunch with damp hands while I’m in the shower and reshape the curls. Not sure if this would work for your sons hair but this video is a really quick routine with minimal faff

I’ve been really happy with the Only Curls system.

Thanks both, anything that he can scrunch in and leave is a total bonus. He does need to shampoo with a dandruff shampoo which of course is terrible for hair condition, but is conditioning now, though I wondered if a curl cream would be better than gel. Is gel drying these days?

I don’t personally but I’ve never had dry hair. I use umber to gianni scrunching jelly, have heard good things of Harry’s gel. Only curls will be moisturising so might be a good shout if he has dry hair. It just doesn’t feel great on my hair when my hairdresser uses it so I’ve never bought it for myself. I use frizz ease dream curls and nizoral alternately for my flaky scalp but I still have flakes so haven’t cracked the shampoo department yet. I just a curl crème under my gel too. I also recommend manes by Mel on you tube, she has a video with her boyfriend where she styles his hair but it is more faffing. Good ideas for techniques though
