Dress neckline to suit my shape?

Hi all, I'm asking because I've never known what sort of shape for the 'top half' of a dress I should be going for with my figure.

I'm shopping for a going out dress to look as gorgeous as possible🙏

The question is what neckline suits someone with broad, muscular shoulders and a flat chest? I know that full sleeves and round neck are ok, but I wondered if something a bit sexier also suited? I have short hockey player's legs so can't conpensate with stunning lower half and would probably prefer to draw the eye away from them.

I'd be very grateful for any advice from those in the know!

Have you seen this?

Might be of use. I think one shoulder dresses look nice if you have wider shoulders.

Oh that is really helpful thank you Cinnamon! I'll have a good read. Funnily enough I wore a one shouldered dress last time I went out, not knowing if I was breaking a rule...

I know spaghetti straps do not look great. I'm wondering about halterneck/ the type that narrows at the top. And off the shoulder. I'll read that page! 🌺

Halternecks, definitely.

Thanks Zebracat - I'll look for some

Have a look at kibbe body types! I'm broad and never knew what to wear on top but figured out my lines and now I steer towards wrap styles which balance out the broad with nipped in waist

I did google pictures of Sharron Davies (the swimmer) too, as she often looks very glamorous. She used to be less busty, so maybe look at some of the older ones.

I like a scoop or u neckline with cap sleeves or thick straps are the most flattering for my square shoulders. I find halter neck, racer back and spaghetti straps just emphasise how much shoulder there is. My shoulders are bony rather than muscular though so I don’t want to show them off. The last time I wore a halter neck the nurse at dc’s appointment asked me if I was a swimmer! Never again!

I second halternecks. I have wideish shoulders and small bust and they suit me

You could do something with sleeves and a deep V neck:

Or something longer with a side or front split:

The Amazon one is just an example of how this shape draws attention to your cleavage and away from your shoulders.

Thank you for all of the suggestions! I will look up kibbe body shapes.

Have googled Sharron Davies to compare, and we have exactly the same arms and shoulders, but she has more cleavage (even in the old days!). I'm a 36AA. I have a small waist so wrap style tops might work but do emphasise the washboard chest 😂 I'm going to try a halter neck dress on in a shop and see how it looks.

Really appreciate the advice Flowers

Here's an example of shoulders in vest. Doesn't look so wrong in gym clothes, but in anything sophisticated they sort of look ill-fitting.
