Some shoes/flip flops/slippers giving pain

Some shoes/flip flops/slippers give me feet/leg pain even though they are the right size. Why? Happened to anyone else?

Yes. It's likely that they're not providing adequate support to the foot, even though they may be the "right" size and appear to fit, resulting in you subconsciously tensing the muscles and ligaments as you walk which can give aches and pains. I used to get this a lot when younger, especially dull, gnawing aches right up to the knee. I know now that they were caused by ill-supporting footwear, particularly certain flip-flops or slip-on shoes. Never have this now, despite being 30+ years older as I'm more careful in what I wear. More expensive doesn't always mean better too; it's how they suit your individual foot that counts.

Anything that isn’t strapped to your foot makes you walk differently, so flip flops and slip on shoes aren’t good. You also need a good thick sole, no ballet slipper type shoes.

Where is the pain? I used to live in ballet pumps and ended up with a really sore back. I went to a podiatrist as my osteoporosis said it was foot related, and he was disgusted at my choice of footwear (he was quite... vocal about slip ons or soft soled shoes like converse). He suggested I wear rigid soled lace ups - something to do with keeping the foot held properly.

I noticed a bad back when lockdown started as I was slopping around in slippers, so I bought a pair of cheap laces to were in the house and really noticed a difference.

It’s all about foot support! I had to stop buying flat soled shoes about 6 years ago and I’ve had no issues since- I really like Superga shoes, the insides are shaped for arch support

I get pain in my shins and calves if I walk to far in my Birkenstocks or flip flops, it’s the foot scrunching that you do in slip on shoes.
