Should I go to a hairdresser?

And if I do what do i get done? I haven't been to a hairdresser in probably a decade. I am newly 48 and my hair is tired of being cut and sometimes coloured by me. I don't wear make up much, I am working from home, but I do like to look "ok". I am just not sure how to get styled, what to ask for, how to ensure I get what I want when I don't know what I want!?

Help me Mumsnet you're my only hope.

You do a good job! Based on your description i expected something quite needed up but it's a nice cut!

Thank you Dudsville that is kind. I have used a hair oil thing overnight which replenished my hair so it is looking better at the moment. I am torn between keeping the status quo and getting a professional to give my hair colour and style the once over and being properly styled for once. If that makes sense. I think I am tired generally and feel I look it more and more. I am very DIY generally I cut my family's hair, I make clothes, do plumbing/ fixing around the house so maybe I want someone else to do the maintenance for once.

I mean you could have high/low lights to bring more tones and richness and less block colour but that would be really expensive to upkeep. I think the length suits and you have the type of hair that doesn’t need precision cutting.

I think you'd be surprised at how much a good colour and cut could transform you. You do look to be very pale with pale hair so possibly look a bit washed out ? a better colour could be just the thing to lift you. Post the result ?

Your hair looks good. You are naturally very fair? And have a natural look?

you could go for a bit of a Root lift, clip your hair up Whileitsdrying so it lifts up a little on top. Or use a texturising spray to get a root lift.

I think you don’t ‘need’ anything doing at all, but if you are bored, try a few lowlights, paint on some darker blonde stripes with a semi permanent, to create some contrast. But you have very fair brows, so dont go too dark!

Ah, sounds like you need a little pampering!
