very short hair cut

I'm thinking of giving up on growing my hair again and reverting to the hair cut of my 20's. This is very short, a bit like this page but with the hair shorter up the back. However, I am now 40 and fatter (just started diet as hit 11st 6lbs after a great Christmas and New Year )
Am I making a big mistake? My hair is curly/frizzy and really just impossible, I try to grow it every time I get pregnant and I've never reached a stage where I think it looks good.
I think it will at least look neat if I have it all cut off. Also, I've been having it dyed for the last year - are roots just impossible on short hair?
Any help please, I have appt at hairdressers this Sat where I'm supposed to be having just a trim and colour. Will need to book more time if I'm to be sheared!

well if you suited it then I expect you will still suit it.11stone isn't big unless you're 4ft tall.
Do you wear makeup, have good skin?
Sometimes such a sever cut needs a bit of feminizing.
Saying that I met someone yesterday with hair that short and she looked fab, very striking and minimal makeup, she was very fashionably dressed though.

I have seen some middle aged women with very short silver hair that looked fantastic - they were both dancers though and slender with good bones - short hair can be great but it depends if it's short hair just chopped off because it's easier or a style - iyswim...high or low lights would add texture and interest.

brimfull · 15/01/2008 13:32

lovely

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/01/2008 13:34

yes, that's more the thin - urchin-ish and a bit tousled

bosch · 15/01/2008 13:36

Ha ha ha - am definitely not going to post a picture of myself!

I think you have confirmed what I feared that short hair isn't for the 'older ladee' unless she's very chic. My hair still isn't long enough to tie back and I've been growing it for two years now! I don't do make-up and I only really look smart (clothes wise) when I go to work.

Hmm. I think I thought that neat hair might make up for a multitude of other (weight, no clothes sense, no make up) sins, but I'm expecting rather a lot!

Interesting point vis high/low lights though - I might cling to that faint hope...

ggirl - I found that on google images too! And a really great one of Halle Berry. Both probably a size 6 though . Any images of short hair on a size 14 (which I NEARLY am!)?

I have a friend who is stylish and above a 14 -and she has dark, short hair - she does wear make up though -will try to locate a pic to demonstrate - her hair is quite thick and tending towards the wavy

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/01/2008 13:51

this is her flickr page - www.flickr.com/photos/buttercuprocks/

TheGiftedandTalentedGoat · 15/01/2008 13:56

if you do chop it, leave some long to tuck behind the ears (looks softer and less eighties)

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/01/2008 14:00

yes, I think that looks better than the short back and sides razored look, especially at the back

Dropdeadfred · 15/01/2008 14:04

don't like that

curlywurlycremeegg · 15/01/2008 14:09

Mines very short and I am not skinny see last pic in my profile, be gentle people

curlywurlycremeegg · 15/01/2008 14:09

hmm, just realised you can't really see it, will find another one

bosch · 15/01/2008 14:10

MaryAnnSingleton - your friend looks great. But her hair is way longer than I was planning!

I'm afraid that I was thinking of the 1980's short back and sides razored look. In fact, I used to go to a barbers in the early 90's.

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/01/2008 14:17

oh,don't get razored !

SpawnChorus · 15/01/2008 14:26

CCCE - That's a great hair style (and face!)

Bosch - I'm usually all for short hair, and have recently gone for a big chop myself. However the style you're describing doesn't sound good, and the style in the photo is not at all flattering IMO.

I currently have a style similar to this My hair is very thick and coarse, and this style works well with it.

What do you think of this one (it's got an updated 80s vibe IMO)

bosch · 15/01/2008 14:28

Would you trust your hairdresser enough to let her do anything to your hair? Or to tell you if you were completely mad to ask for a particular style?

I know I won't get razored. But with such frizzy hair, it only really looks neat when around 1" long!

I do think make-up is quite important with v short hair, unless your lucky enough to have naturally huge eyelashes etc (I'm not )

SpawnChorus · 15/01/2008 14:30

frizziness on short hair can be combatted it wax/product. Toni and Guy do a great one which isn't greasy.

curlywurlycremeegg · 15/01/2008 14:33

Thanks Spawn, hate having my photo taken so really only have my wedding photos and MN seems to resize them when I upload them so you can't really see the texture. I don't know about you but I do find that it can be difficult to find a good hairdresser for short cuts, I think it's all about getting the texture right. If I feel like I need a lift I have a "shoeshine' colour, where the colour is applied just to the tips of the hair from a piece of foil, as if :shoe shining" boots etc.

bosch · 15/01/2008 14:34

Eek. SpawnChorus, I think that I'd be afraid to have a hairstyle as, well, considered as that. I just want to rub a bit of wax or serum through my hair in the morning and go. They do look lovely but I'd make a complete hash of them on me!

CWCE's hair looks much more laid back and might give me hope...

I am forever getting called "mate', when people see me from the back , then "oh sorry" when I turn round

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/01/2008 14:35

curlywurly - yes,that is a chic hairdo -
and spawn, those are lovely hair cuts, esp the first one. The key I think is use of styling products -I had v short hair once and used a bit of wax to help it along
