tuxedos for the groom and groomsmen?

mycarisabakedbeancan · 18/06/2022 17:13

please give me your opinions?
are tuxedos a good choice or James Bond light?
which men need to dress in a similar way?
could the father of the bride chose his own suit ?
or does everyone just do what they want?

I love tuxedos for a wedding.

I like all the wedding party men in the same suits.

What do you mean by groomsmen? Ushers? Groom, best man and fathers should have matching suits traditionally, groom can have an extra adornment - funky waistcoat or different button hole. Tuxes fine. Ushers lounge suits with button holes that match the others.

But it's your wedding you can do what you want!

Thankyou just new to it all and am finding it very overwhelming-

Tuxedos are a good choice if the groom thinks they are a good choice. Not typical in the UK but if I were at a wedding where the groomsmen were in tuxes I'd think it was fun.

At my wedding, DH, the groomsmen and my father wore matching suits. No father of the groom at my wedding so not sure if that's usual. Both of the most recent weddings I attended only had the groom and groomsmen in the same suit and fathers did their own thing. Not sure if that's a coincidence or a shifting tradition though.

I prefer a well cut suit for a wedding, but if you like it then why not?

RaaRaaLaLaLa · 18/06/2022 18:37

You can do what you want.

The reason people have matching suits comes from when people started to hire suits for weddings. Before that, when most men had suits, they just wore the best suit they had for a wedding. They didn't match.

Proper posh people don't have matching suits for weddings but just like baby names it's best if people have what they actually want. Don't have what you think other people think you should have.

I prefer the look of tuxes and wish they were more common here. A classic black tux is timeless.

Anytimeiseeit · 18/06/2022 19:00

I think tuxes look great but if you’re doing them then the whole male bridal party should wear them imo.
on the other end of the scale, at our wedding, all the men bridal party just wore their own suits, all different

Kite22 · 18/06/2022 19:10

I agree there is no 'should'. You can do what you want, if you can afford it.

I'm not a particular fan of a tux myself, but it isn't my wedding Smile

Same re who wants to dress up - tends to be groom, best man and ushers, then some people also ask the 2 fathers if they want to, too.

mycarisabakedbeancan · 18/06/2022 20:48

thankyou all
the thing is at the moment there are no normal suits around.
apparently they are all held up in giant shipping containers in various parts of the world. Yes evenHigo Boss!!🙄
we cannot afford to pay fir all the men to have bespoke suits so the tux option seems doable

We had the longer jackets, a waistcoat & striped trousers for the groom, best man & ushers but my dad & exh's dad had traditional jackets. I saw a wedding a friend attended yesterday online where the groom & best man wore navy tailcoats & trousers with a grey checked waistcoat & bow ties, the ushers, & fathers wore navy suit jackets & traditional ties with the waistcoats, they looked really smart.

RuthW · 18/06/2022 23:30

Not sure what groomsmen are but traditionally the groom, dads and ushers all have the same if in morning dress or tux

bouncydog · 19/06/2022 04:06

@mycarisabakedbeancan DD has just got married in Ireland. Invite was black tie so the majority of male guests wore tux. Groom and best man had waistcoats - and groom had a different buttonhole. Brides dad wore his own tux as he already had one. Many of the male guest’s hired their suits and they all looked great! Also a good way of saving money if it’s not something that would be worn regularly.

Then do what you can op.xont punish or ruminate on what's not in your control.whst options are, then click one of those.
Please don't get stressed and overwhelmed.make the choices that are within means and make you happy.it does NOT matter what the norm is( nothing is only your norm is the norm lol) this is your day.
Of course ask for advice and tips and share anytime if you need sounding board.but make sure the last opinion is always yours.then this will all be ok.
