Waterproof 'summer coat' for skirt/dress wearer...

Poppins2016 · 14/06/2022 10:22

I'm trying to find an elegant(ish) solution for a waterproof summer coat.

I exclusively wear skirts and dresses and have found that most coats only look good over jeans or leggings.

My struggle is so bad that I currently don't even own a waterproof summer coat as I don't want to buy something I hate just because it's practical and I'm desperate (I threw the last, ancient, ugly coat out last year when the seams started to leak during a downpour...), so I've been relying on umbrellas... which is not particularly practical with children, pushchairs, etc!

Any recommendations from fellow skirt and dress wearers, please? Budget is ideally £100 or less but I'll stretch to £150 for the perfect solution (waterproof, stylish, child proof e.g. easily cleaned)...

Thanks!

Have you tried Seasalt? I know they used to do a fairly stylish thin Mac (think it was called Kellifrey) a while ago.

I hadn't thought of Seasalt... Kellifray seems to have been discontinued, although it is available on eBay and for that sort of price I'm tempted to try it...

What's Seasalt sizing like?

Hopeful bump for any other recommendations?!

Interesting question. I've got a Lighthouse Clothing waterproof I really like, but I don't think I've worn it with a dress yet, and looking at the web site all the photos are of people wearing jeans!

It's definitely tricky! Even the shops that sell dresses like the ones I wear (e.g. Joules, Fat Face, Monsoon) don't seem to pair coats with dresses in their advertising... presumably because they don't work as well together? Or perhaps I just can't imagine it and it would actually be fine?!

I bought a gorgeous 'fit n flare' winter coat by Hobbs (the Francesca in aubergine) last year, just wish it was as easy to find something I love for summer... but admittedly the Hobbs coat isn't really child proof and I have a down filled coat for days out with them which works over dresses etc. and washes well!

Would the Seasalt Coverack coat be smart enough? I have one in a pale colour (discontinued now) which is my smart summer coat but I am a scruff. Sizing is true to size.

I just bought this: www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/women-blocktech-coat-445005.html

It's extremely thin and light, but looks quite smart.

Have you looked at M&S?
I bought a fantastic leopard print stormwear car coat last week that also comes in navy & buff. They also have several other styles that you might like & lots of trench coats in summery colours.

Other than that I like Protected Species coats but they're fairly pricy.
