Dress frustration

Caminante · 13/06/2022 10:48

I have spent a couple of months looking for cotton dresses suitable to wear to work )which is fairly relaxed)
I'm very short, size 12 but big waist so avoid anything with a waistband or belt. 55 so not a fan of the puffy sleeve look--plus it makes my big boobs look all matronly.

First hot day in the office and I am wearing a shapeless black M&S t shirt dress--I'm sure I can do better!

I have scoured M&S, ASOS, New Look, have tried on loads of things but not finding anything that suits me 🥲

I'm happy with midi/midaxi, budget up to about £50 I guess but could go a little higher.

Have you found anything lovely? Help me please 😂

Biggest recent disappointment was this: https://www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-floral-midi-smock-dress/p/clp60542165?intid=mobileappppdpshare

Lovely fabric, decent pattern but hangs like a sack of spuds and like I said, I can't do the belt thing.

I've got this from Next, I bought it in the Tall so it would be longer. It's very flattering on, had pockets and the pattern helps hide a tum. Looks good with black low heel mules.

I like that very much, thanks! Hard to guess the length but the shape is definitely good 😊

yeah it's hard to tell from the picture, normally they have someone wearing it to give a clue but I can't see that. From experience and other stuff that's similar, I suspect it's probably knee length, which can sometimes not be great if you're on the shorter side

TulipsGarden · 14/06/2022 14:11

Have you had a look at Seasalt? They have quite a few I think would suit, and you can always get them taken up if they're too long.

Yes I do have one Seasalt dress actually! Good call on that one. But I haven't seen anything this year that speaks to me.

@Mandypocket I've actually ordered it so I can let you know! Just below the knee is not a good look for me. When my legs were lovely and toned I liked either short dresses well above the knee or well below!

@Rina66 thank you so much for that! It's a little busy for me, I'm not good with loads of colours but I bet it looks lovely on the right person

Thanks! I like the look of their dresses but have never found one that fits me properly

@Caminante Thanks, yes please let me know! Also, a bit random, but would you mind letting me know how big the pockets are too?

I like these from Amazon. They are LONG so you will need to take them up which is great as you can decide exactly how long you want. I don't (can't be arsed to!) sew but the local dry-cleaners take them up for me for a few quid. They are pure cotton seersucker (except the solid colours), so they also don't need ironing. I put them wet on a hanger to dry.

I always wear a slip under a dress which can transform the way a dress hangs.

I actually wearing this black and white one today! I love it.
Not sure what will happen when I wash it and definitely questioning whether it is cotton but I have already had some compliments and I am very comfortable 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Ooh that was a quick turn around.
It does look very comfortable and forgiving.

All of the ones I have bought have been pure cotton apart from a solid colour one.

They go slightly seersucker textured when washed, which is perfect as it is quite a fine cotton lawn, and it makes them a little thicker. Also perfect for someone like me who DETESTS ironing! Perfect fabric for summer.

Did you take it up? I am 5'5" and they are ankle length on me.

Caminante · 16/06/2022 13:37

@Haffiana no I just wore it as it was this time, checked with my daughter that it didn't look ridiculous 😂 I will see how it sits after I wash it, then can get it shortened. I just wanted that new dress feeling yesterday and couldn't wait!

Caminante · 16/06/2022 15:14

@Mandypocket dress arrived! Very nice actually but the wrong length and I should have sized up.
Pockets were big enough for me to put my hands in but no bigger than that, hope that's helpful!

Mandypocket · 16/06/2022 15:18

@Caminante sorry it was too long. I assume too long rather than short? Would you normally want a shorter dress then or are you thinking midi? Thanks for the pocket info :)

Either a bit shorter or much longer, it's just on that unflattering level because of my short legs. Fabric was very nice. But it was the wrong size anyway so not to worry 😊

The scale of this Community Clothing dress should work, too. Nicely flexible as it could be worn without the belt, or with trousers. Again, available in different fabrics.

Community Clothing is just so nice.
