Silver vs gold hardware on bags

Can I ask for any thoughts on silver vs gold hardware on bags?

I'm currently looking for a new handbag and it seems like lots of brands only offer gold hardware. I know gold is very in right now but I wear exclusively silver jewellery as that's what suits my skin tone. I look quite sick if I wear gold! I hadn't thought much about this before but I think the mixing of gold and silver would bother me a bit, although reduces my options quite a lot.

I also think some gold hardware looks a bit tacky, although lots of people are saying it's more formal than silver...

Am I overthinking or is anyone else bothered by this?

This is funny to me because I prefer gold but when I look can only find silver. Costume jewellery is even worse! And hand crafted. Lots and lots of silver

Never given it much thought but I have bags with gold hardware and bags with silver hardware. That way I can match it to my outfit and jewellery i.e if wearing my fave black blazer with gold buttons I will choose a bag with gold hardware.

It's really old fashioned to follow fashion "rules", but wearing something you aren't into because someone else has said it's trendy is equally silly 🤭

OP is talking about her options being reduced because she thinks she can’t mix metals.

MinglingFlamingo · 08/06/2022 14:10

I think it depends on the colour of the bag. If it's a brown handbag then gold hardware but if it's black then silver. Having said that apart from necessary metal such as zips, clasps and strap holder things I'm not a big fan of over excessive metal on handbags. I feel it looks too blingy and can get scratched quickly

@Mrcpy

I think she said that mixing metals would bother her and that gold jewellery makes her look sick. So not sure telling her to wear it anyway, because "it's trendy" is particularly helpful 🤷‍♀️

To be fair, she says both:
a) she doesn’t like gold - fair enough
b) she’s bothered by mixing metals - no need

Bag hardware can’t make her look sick unless she’s holding the bag up to her face all the time (???) so I took that bit to mean she likes gold jewellery, not that she doesn’t like gold hardware.

OP, wear whatever you like! Don’t overthink it. Fine to mix metals these days if you like to.

Yikes, you're a bit feisty today no?

What happened to the giggles 🤭? You're doing bullet points now and multiple questions marks????? Calm down, it's only handbags 🤭

I didn't expect my words to be so closely analysed haha, I will put more thought into what I type next time!

I said I hadn't thought much about mixing metals before but it might be something that bothered me. My current bag is years old so I haven't run into this problem recently. The more I do think about it, I'd say that mixing metals isn't necessarily bad (and is also fairly trendy as Mrcpy mentioned) but having just one random gold item in with all silver would be what bothered me, I'd want it to look a bit more deliberate. If I wore any gold jewellery, I'd feel like it balanced out a bit more and looked more intentional, even if that intention is to not look too put together. I think I'll stick to silver because of this.

This is just my opinion though and I am neither super trendy nor do I religiously stick to fashion rules!

I like either brass hardware or pale gold.

Silver, gunmetal and pewter are ok but dont suit my warm colouring.

Jellykat · 08/06/2022 19:47

Oh no, i cant stand Gold on anything! I dont 'do' Brass, Brown or Beige either, regardless of whats in.. Stick with Silver imo, OP

hihellohihello · 08/06/2022 22:03

Most of my bags don't have very prominent hardware. Problem solved.😉

Ireolu · 09/06/2022 00:10

I mix metals always have done. Can't be bothered to change things around. I wear my dad's gold Cross everyday now. He passed away in March. Will wear this with white gold earrings and gold hw or silver hw handbags/sunglasses with gold accents etc. I honestly don't care. Not wearing his cross is non negotiable so everything has to fit in around it. I probably have more accessories with gold hw (personal preference). I find it warmer on bags I find silver a little more cold. Its also depends on the harshness of the gold tone. Alot of things will.have light gold hw which is not as loud/in your face as a more brassy gold colour. Each to their own I say.

Sunnytwobridges · 09/06/2022 01:40

I hate silver, it seems so overdone these days. I prefer the warm color of gold. I hate that I can rarely find anything in gold.
