I'm in a make up rut.

Attempted to buy a new lipstick the other day & after 45 minutes in Boots scrawling various shades of pink on the back of my hand realised I am completely clueless.

So, what lippy do you wear? What colours suit us?

And is green eye shadow always wrong?

I've thought of green eye shadow, but always back out !
My current favourite lipstick is a Bourjois gloss one (in a blue tube) in Brun Hallee - it's a dark but clear red/brown with slight sparkles in it - quite sheer and natural but adds a bit of colour, and I sometimes top it with a clear sparkly Lancome Juicy Tube

And Laura Mercier (are you sensing a trend here) Tender Lips for evening (darkish pinky red)

could do with a new lippy and a decent foundation

Is Laura Mercier quite expensive?

I used to use a YSL lippy that was perfect, but can no longer afford to spend £17 on it.

The Bourgois one sounds good.

Like the idea of grey eye shadow, but how does one get away with darker shades? Won't I look like the undead?

Lippy pinks suit, also warm golden brown type glossy things.
I prefer warm neutral/brown shades of eyeshadows, have also ventured to purples in the past, though they're rather cold!

Ooh foundation is one thing I have got right Enid.

Have you tried Clinique almost make up? It's very light & dewy, & I put their pore minimiser over the top, which is completely fab & acts as a sort of polyfilla

Benefit do a lovely product called "benetint" is a liquid red tint for lips and cheeks, works well with blonde colouring...

I also have a lipstick from the Body Shop, they do quite a nice range of pinks and reds...

I think it depends on the colour tones of your skin...I got a great make up girl at Benefit who advised me and worked out any orangey-reds look awful on me, I need bluey-pink and red tones...

I also wear Body Shop moisturising foundation and their sensitive eyes mascara..

I do have a green eyeshadow for when I'm feeling really exciting ;)

I've got a very pale skin & blonde hair (hazel eyes though - well, a sort of orangey really).

I've never ever found a lipstick that suited me. Also - the only 'foundation / base' i can find pale enough is the No7 coverstick (the one that comes up like a lipstick). I can never wear a powder - looks awful!

I tend to go mad with colour around my eyes instead.

Benefit products are lovely, but couldn't get on with Benetint for some reason.

That's a top tip though - might go & pay them a visit & ask for some advice (although I do find that kind of thing excruciating...)

Thanks for everyone's good advice

I am blonde with blue eyes, and I wear green and blue eyeshadows (not together, obviously, it's not 1986!)

Tend to use sludgy, olive greens with a bit of shimmer, and navy blues. I have tried powder blue but feel like Annifrid from Abba.

Greys look really good with my colouring, tend to use silvery greys accented with dark grey, or black. Also gunmetal colours. As long as you're not too heavy handed with the brush you won't end up looking like an emo!

Purple eyeshadow looks good as well, deep plum and violet colours.

I am also LOVING coloured liquid eyeliner, NO 7 are really good, but also Tesco do an excellent liquid liner in teal, gunmetal violet. They go on brilliantly.

The rest of my makeup bag:

Foundation - Max Factor (can't remember the name of it) and the Rimmel shimmer one for evening
Concealer - By Terry (like Lancome Touche Eclat)
Powder - Chantecaille
Blusher - cream mousse blusher from Tesco
Lipstick - don't bother generally, usually lipgloss or lipsalve.
Eyeshadows - really good cheap ones from Bourjois. Also Maybelline. Individual ones from Estee Lauder are also excellent and blend really well (they also last for ages unless your daughter gets hold of them, grr)
Liquid eyeliners
Mascara - boots No 7
