Tuxedo ideas for teenager

DD is 14 and lives mostly in hoodies, combat pants and DMs. She would rather eat her own eyeballs than put on a dress, but she has been invited to a very high profile event this summer. She will be on a team representing her country and at the end of the week there will be a gala dinner of adults and teens from all the nationalities taking part, the host country is France. She has already stated she will not wear a dress, and has never worn heels in her life. She is tall, slim and has very eye catching short curly red hair. She prefers an androgynous look and has been impressed by the style of Annie Lennox and Tilda Swinton - not trying to look like a boy, but not trying to look like a girl either. She doesn’t really enjoy shopping, so would not relish a traipse round the shops. However she knows what she does like - she wants a trouser suit, but whatever she wears underneath the jacket must not be cropped or low cut. The closest she has got to a look she would like is this, but I am worried she will get too hot in a suit and shirt in France in august, so wondering what to put under the jacket. Also wondering about footwear.

if anyone has any suggestions as to where I can find this sort of outfit, I would be very grateful. The importance of the event is such that I cannot just give her some cash and send her off into town, she’d be wearing a NASA hoodie and new white trainers before I knew it and declare it suitable! This is what she sort of likes, but open to all suggestions.

You have to open the photo to see the full outfit.

Somewhere like M&S would be good for trouser suits, or Karen Millen if you are particularly flush.

If you're worried she'll get too hot, a waistcoat instead of / as well as jacket good.

A white boys school shirt then fine underneath.

Next do mens skinny fit that goes down to a teen size could she try this and get it altered ?

Belovedfool · 05/06/2022 15:36

She's probably best looking at teen boy's suits and having it tailored to fit her, especially around the shoulders as they'll likely be too broad.

Under the jacket...would something really simple like a high necked silk t-shirt be appropriate? Absolutely simple in shape, but in a luxe fabric. She could then take the jacket off and still look chic.

It's out of stock at the moment but might be worth setting up an email alert for this one: www.rococlothing.co.uk/girls-black-tuxedo-suit-lennox-2/

There's also a burgundy and checked version.

Failing that, ASOS has some lovely womens tuxedos

If you keep an eye on H&M boyswear they do a blazer with trousers in black that goes up to age 14+ (around a size 10). I've got this version in dark blue cotton / linen. It's a very slim cut - I have narrow shoulders and it fits them really well. The black version is in polyester so might get a bit sweaty but the fit is pretty much the same. (As I remember it's also cheaper.) It sells out regularly but they keep on restocking it.

My DD had a tux suit from Zara for her visa GCSE prom. She wore a lace t shirt underneath it and brogue shoes.

We did have the suit tailored to fit her better (she's tall and very slim). We did spend almost as much on the tailoring as the suit though. But well worth it for DD.

Post GCSE prom!!

failing40s · 05/06/2022 16:20

This from Zara would work. Not sure about the trousers the model is wearing though, but slim black trousers will be easy to find! She could wear a vest/cami top underneath and black flat shoes.

failing40s · 05/06/2022 16:22

Oh crossed posts there with @RafasLeftBicep

ASOS also have a tux jacket.

Palavah · 05/06/2022 16:31

Unless she's particularly busty then any camisole or vest will be fine under the jacket.

Loads of turtleneck vests/ sleeveless shirts to choose from in black or white.

Alternatively, a black halterneck jumpsuit with a blazer/tux jacket in white would also work.

backinthebox · 05/06/2022 17:03

Love the Zara jacket (obviously DD will have final say) but also liking the idea of a halter neck jumpsuit with jacket. She is not busty at all (she is sickeningly like a racing snake - she and I will both be wearing sports clothing during the daytimes and I look like a middle aged woman in too much Lycra, DD in same outfit looks like something from a superhero movie!) but she does not like a low cut top or anything seethrough. Lovely shiny brogues would be a great shoe choice. Thanks for replies, I am hopeless with clothes!

There are lots of options on Zara but not the tuxedo style that my dd bought from there for her prom a few years ago.

She wore a plain t-shirt and lime green Converse with hers!

Sadik · 05/06/2022 21:25

My dd also wore the Zara tuxedo for her prom a few years back - it was a fantastic cut & perfect for a slim teenager. There's lots of both the jacket and the trousers on ebay, might be worth looking there. (I reckon lots of girls bought them for prom!) I'd suggest a simple cream silk vest top underneath?
