Garms for gigs: what does one wear to go to see a band these days?

In an attempt to be a less boring parent I am taking DD and her friends to see Lorde and Harry Styles in the next couple of months. What do I wear?

I managed to feel not completely ridiculous for Wolf Alice and Dry Cleaning gigs by channelling my 17 year old goth self, plus it was winter.

I know it will be dark and no-one will be looking at me. But I would like to have some fun with it. Any suggestions? (50 and a bit fat, am totally prepared to go in my usual severe minimalism stuff but I think DD would love me to make an effort. She's got whole mood boards for her possible outfits)

I was at The War on Drugs last night at Edinburgh Corn Exchange. People were wearing what they probably (almost certainly) put on that morning. I was wearing an L F Market black linen dress and sneakers-because that's what I put on when I got up. Women were wearing jeans with trainers, jeans with boots, several in dresses, long, knee length, short.

I don't really understand these sort of threads. There's nothing particularly special about going to see a band.

@KimikosNighmare - why respond then? you clearly didn't even actually read my post, you great misery

The point is I want to have a bit of fun with it - and its a big stadium type scenario in the provinces and I am informed by the teens that more effort is required.

I saw Foo Fighters at Wembley Stadium and at Hyde Park- they were both in the summer. I wore a summer dress.

Wear what you want- dress up -don't dress up - no- one will be looking at you or even notice.

beguilingeyes · 18/04/2022 16:15

Pretty much always jeans and some sort of band t-shirt. Usually not the band I'm seeing.
Comfort is important if it's a standing gig. We saw Sparks last night at The Roundhouse and were standing up (also sat next to Cate Blanchett at the burger bar opposite beforehand).

LookdeepintotheParka · 18/04/2022 18:51

I get it OP as I only started going again to gigs a few years ago. The first one I was completely flummoxed as to what to wear so I dressed up and felt so embarrassed. I go a lot more now the kids don't need babysitting Grin and always dress down (jeans and T Shirt) and layers to take off as it gets hotter. However I don't go to anything that warrants a more glamorous look!!

Maybe you could go more glam with a vest top, blazer and coated leggings? My DD would be very envious you managed to get Harry styles tickets Grin

thedefinitionofmadness · 18/04/2022 19:11

@beguilingeyes Cate Blanchett - did she look incredible? I bet Sparks were great.

Honestly I know the correct answer to this is Any Old Thing. I've not stopped going to gigs at all its just usually much more indie bands/ venues.

I have it on good authority (DD) that people will Dress Up A Bit for Harry and tbh they do tend to round here, for an event, Up in the Northern Provinces.

How old is DD and what is she wearing? Just to give an idea of the vibe, then maybe we can help suggest a grown up version?

SocksAndTheCity · 18/04/2022 19:29

I don't know who Harry is, but my recommendation is wear old shoes. The floor is likely to wind up a very unpleasant place Confused

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/04/2022 20:01

For a pop band/singer I would say jeans, trainers and a nice top/cami. Whatever you choose make sure your feet are comfy!

LadyMacduff · 18/04/2022 20:04

Jeans, boots or trainers and definitely layers!

thedefinitionofmadness · 18/04/2022 20:05

DD's 15. For Harry she's wearing a (cheap) black stretchy mesh dress with cherry print and docs. She looks amazing in it tbh. Apparently she needs some kind of flamboyant accessory
For Lorde she has a long pale purple satin slip dress and docs or converse. She's bought it all from charity shops
Oh to be a teenager.....

Wide legged red trousers and a leather jacket. Cheekbones to die for (Blanchett) . She was with husband and kids.

Freetodowhatiwant · 18/04/2022 20:20

I have this thing that I always need to wear black or dark colours when I go see a band. So for me it will be a black dress and either trainers or chunky boots. Possibly a denim jacket that can be tied round the waist or a leather bomber if colder. Not in a heavy metal/rock/goth way but in a relatively trendy 40 something way. At least I hope that’s what I look like.

StStephensTower · 18/04/2022 21:18

Missing the point completely but having seen Dry Cleaning twice, they are totally over-rated IMO!
Anyway, I am taking my DD’s to see HS too in the summer, will probably wear over sized shirt over a cami, fake leather j/leggings and docs or trainers

ISpyCobraKai · 18/04/2022 21:23

It depends on the gig I suppose.
I wore black skinny dungarees to George Ezra.
The women next to me was wearing a midi skirt and trainers.

ISpyCobraKai · 18/04/2022 21:26

Oh Wolf Alice are supporting Harry Styles in June!
I'm not remotely interested in them.

OldLadyInPolyester · 18/04/2022 21:43

I would channel 90s /00s indie glam because why not? Glitter eyes, satin slip dress over a t-shirt....

thedefinitionofmadness · 18/04/2022 22:04

Oh I LOVED Dry Cleaning - both times. And Wolf Alice show was stunning - philistines! Mitski supporting for this gig, who we're also seeing as a headliner the week after.

Yeah I might as well relive my youth @OldLadyInPolyester (apt name) given its fashionable.
