I live in stripy tops and jeans - how do I update my wardrobe a bit? I’m lost!

I’m a short pear shape, carrying a little extra weight but not much around half a stone which I aim to do something about.
But I’m lost.
The only things I feel good in are stretchy skinnies (because I have a small waist and big hips so I need the stretch) and stretchy, stripy tops. I always feel like I dress the same.

I’ve been browsing online but it all looks garish and too young for me (I’m 37) or like it won’t suit my shape at all. People always say skater dresses for a pear shape but they make me look far bigger than I am.

I’m literally don’t know what to wear or what will suit me anymore. Any tips or anyone in the same boat?

I tried stitchfix - probably wouldn't have picked anything they selected (but I was stuck in a rut) but really like everything they picked.

I like A line skirts (denim, button down etc above knee length) with a tighter fitting tucked in top (pretty much anything works but often a polo neck or ribbed jumper) with black opaques and boots. I’m a very similar body shape to you so might work?

Thanks for the posts. I’ve been eyeing up stitch fix, did you find they got the sizes right? I really struggle because of the difference in hips to waist and the fact I’m tiny on top but heavy on the bottom!

I'm the same shape as you - teeny waist and big hips. I'm 35.

I have been living in Zara paper bag waist jeans: www.zara.com/uk/en/z1975-baggy-paperbag-jeans-p05862062.html?v1=148859102

They're a modern cut so make everything look more modern IYSWIM? I'm wearing them with an Equipment washed silk shirt today (v. cheap second hand), but I'll also tuck in a t-shirt or wear with a body suit and a cropped jumper over the top.

Could you update/change your look just by changing colours and patterns, seeing as you feel good in your style. Coloured skinnies? Floral tops - try and find new colour ways.

I really recommend buying jeans or trousers to fit your hips and getting the waist tailored to fit you. It’s incredible what a difference it makes to how you look and feel. I have recently learned how to do the work myself and it’s such a game-changer!

So I have to disagree that different colourways will make a difference - you'll look very similar and probably always reach for your favourite colour anyway.

I think you need to change your silhouette, which might require a bit of trial and error. Try oversized striped top (plenty of them about andI guess not too far from your comfort zone) and looser fit jeans/trousers (maybe rolled or cropped fit?) It takes a bit of getting use to but it will make you look more current.
