Anyone else grow out their grey hair in their late 30s?

I’m 38 and about 40% grey but it’s all the front of my head. Because I have dark brown hair, dyeing it had become a bit of a chore - I had to do the roots every two weeks!

So, about 2 months ago, I decided to start growing it out. Right now it looks bad as the regrowth really stands out. And I’m having a lot of crisis of confidence - I suddenly feel “old” and “past it”, I know that’s a societal thing as people generally dye their grey hairs away at my age (and I am quite young to be so grey) and youth is so worshiped etc. I want to not care about either of those things.

I’d love to hear from people who went grey in their 30s / early 40s and decided to embrace it!

Did you come to love your greys?

I did it in my early 30s. Couldn't be bothered trying to cover it up all the time. Good purple shampoo to keep it bright and it's never looked better.

Now going to look up purple shampoos! Are they for when you’ve got a mix of both or best for when your grey has properly come in?

Well, properly grown out I should say! (As I’m only a few months into the growing it our process.)

I was early 30s when I stopped dying my hair (started going grey in my teens). Now in early 40s and constantly being complimented on my hair. Once you get through this painful stage, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!

I started reacting to dye in my mid thirties so had to stop dyeing. I was probably 75% grey by then. I did have a bit of a crisis of confidence for a bit but it's a great "colour" and looks really good I think.

We (and I include myself) need to accept that grey hair is very very common in our 30s and get this "it's ageing" bollocks in the bin.

I’m 36 and stopped dyeing a couple of years ago, haven’t looked back. I recommend finding some cool greying people on Instagram - I find @silverstrandsofglitter really helpful if I’m having a crisis of confidence, or have a look through the hashtag #silvercaredontcare which has women of all ages rocking grey hair.

I started getting white hairs in my teens and now late thirties I want them to just hurry up and multiply. My hair is really dark so the strands that I have really stand out yet there aren't enough of them to make a statement of them! When I get I'd like to try some bright semi permanent colours to really make the most of them.

I've never dyed my hair. My natural colour is pretty much black and the front is now largely white (not grey). Embrace the lack of effort! All I've done is change to a nice shampoo after years of the usual supermarket available ones and my hair is in good nick. I'm v late 30s.

Fluffyfluff88 · 07/04/2022 21:16

This is all making me feel so much better! Thank you!

I also hate the idea that grey = old, it doesn’t, it’s just that we don’t often get to see women’s real hair colours!

I hope I love it when it grows out. I don’t want the hassle of dyeing it anymore!!

A couple of my colleagues have done this, and they look great 🙂. I think you should go for it.

I'm 38 and started going grey at 15. I got fed up of colouring it last year. I had the hair dresser lighten through my main streaks to the ends so it didnt look so odd growing it out. Occasionally I think about colouring it again, but like yourself my roots are back within weeks and are really obvious.... but honestly, I get sooo many compliments about my hair colour!
My bf is younger and occasionally asks when I'll dye it because 'I look like an old lady'. I just laugh it off though and tell him I'll colour mine when he grows his bald patch back in. 😂 Its a bit mean as he's actually lovely, but he gets my point.
I love my hair colour now. The only thing I struggle with is the condition as it getting really wiry as it gets more grey. 🤔 But colouring over it certainly wont help there.

... check out 'grombre' on insta... thatll certainly hell. Amazing gorgeous women with their lovely greying hair!

vickyc90 · 07/04/2022 22:10

My mam has black hair so has added more and more blonde highlights the greyer she has got. That's my plan and my current situation, can you book one last hair dressers appointment to get it blended in so it grows out evenly

Blossomtoes · 07/04/2022 22:30

I found my first grey hair when I was 16. I stopped dying when I was 43 and have never regretted it. I think the combination of a relatively young face and grey hair is lovely.

Blossomtoes · 07/04/2022 22:30

Oh and you need a really, really good cut.
