What do you do with your hair day to day?

I’m in a real rut. My hair should be nice on paper; regularly cut and coloured, glossy (when clean Blush), thick. But I just don’t ever know what to do with it on a day to day basis and end up scraping it into a very shit, scruffy looking bun with tufts falling out down the back. Like this, the roots easily look greasy, the ends go a bit dry and mad and stick up everywhere and having a big forehead I look terrible.

When it looks good it looks really good, but even when I try it’s heavy and can just fall flat very quickly. Seems to go greasy fast roots only.

It’s shoulder length at the moment, balayage. I had a boho fringe put in and end up scraping it onto the side of my head in a clip 90% of the time because it gets on my nerves and I wear a helmet for my hobby. Again, when it’s ‘done’ in this style it looks pretty good (see above re big forehead) but that’s probably once a month!

I’m off to the hairdresser next week and also have a new job starting soon and want to sort my hair out as I feel it’s really letting down tue effort I put in elsewhere

*the effort

I always pin mine into a bun at the nape of my neck, sometimes I plait, or fishtail plait it first and then stick it in a bun. I have long hair and I like it out of the way, and I haven't found any other style which I think suits me as well, so its the same every day Blush

Probably not what you're asking for as it seems I am also in a rut Blush

@CompassPoint 🤣

I work from home and got into a rut of just shoving it up in a ponytail. Recently had it cut into a long bob to get out of my rut and now it takes me a few seconds each morning to just run a brush through it and looks so much nicer. My longer hair was more flattering when I took the time to style it nicely and wear it down, but I hardly ever did that so this new cut looks a million times better than just tying it up the way I was

Oh good. You sound like me.

I’m booked for a cut next week and was thinking bob to get out of my bun rut.

That sounds promising. Maybe the universal answer to a hair fit is to go for the chop OP?

NeedleNoodle3 · 06/04/2022 20:23

Mine is bra strap length with a fringe. I wash it every other day and straighten so have it straight and shiny. I curl it every so often and it looks lovely.
I deliberately don’t put it up as I used to do that years ago and decided it was a waste of having nice long hair.
I wash just my fringe on the inbetween day.

LikeALeadBalloon · 06/04/2022 20:24

I straighten mine and then pony tail for work or leave out at home. My hair naturally dries in a mad poof so if I don't have time to straighten then I have a mad poof ponytail with a million wiry flyaways

It's not a look to recreate

Thoosa · 06/04/2022 20:25

I also have the big forehead issue.

Maybe sideparting plus long side swept front to create a diagonal would work better for you if you feel like a fringe is needed?

I know about once every eight years I have a fringe cut and it’s always a disaster.

EssexLioness · 06/04/2022 20:33

@Thoosa, hope it does the job for you. It has been a godsend for me. My hair is in much better condition too now it’s shorter. It looks decent every day rather than my previous ‘dragged through a hedge backwards’ look 😆

Llamasally · 06/04/2022 20:36

When I’ve had it shorter before it’s annoyed me because it won’t tie up nicely! Which doesn’t work well for my hobby/sports. Baahhhhh

OP posts:
Llamasally · 06/04/2022 20:37

I want to be able to tie it up, but nice tied up like those enviable people who can do a really effortless, chic- looking top knot

OP posts:
Llamasally · 06/04/2022 20:38

And also not ALWAYS tie it up!

Ponytail, really need to do something kinder to it though. Can't be doing with it down though

Whatadayyyy · 06/04/2022 20:45

Half up half down every single day. Also in a rut. I hate the way my hair just hangs when it’s all down plus it annoys me when it falls in my face. Hate wearing it up

Llamasally · 06/04/2022 20:55

Well this is making me feel better, if not look better

Clarabellawilliamson · 06/04/2022 21:01

I had mine cut to just above shoulder length a few weeks ago and haven't worn it up since! It's long enough to but my 'rut' was just to stick it in a ponytail so I'm trying not to.

Wash and blow dry with the revlon one step (takes 6 minutes) then the next day I use a clip on the front left side which always looks shit on day two.

Beachbabe1 · 06/04/2022 21:25

Im the same, ponytail everyday. School run then WFH so dont see the point in styling it. I only wear it down if im going out out, cant be doing with hair in my face when working, it just annoys me.

Thoosa · 06/04/2022 21:27

That’s what I’m aiming for! Smile

dontgobaconmyheart · 06/04/2022 21:53

I only wear my hair up in the bath and like it down otherwise so probably not very helpful but I can sympathise with the greasy roots/dry ends problem.

I find getting the right shampoo helps and massaging the shampoo into scalp with a scalp brush/massager (few pounds on amazon). I don't use conditioner but just use a keratin treatment once a week on the ends instead and leave it in ages, seems to do the job.

Day to day I am dull as anything and do the same thing, but I am happy with it. Rough blow dry and then I use GHD's to put a curl under in the bottom third and just brush out, so easy and looks like a blow dry. I have long hair with long layers and some graduation at the front, I just cut my hair myself, never been to a hairdresser.

Mytoddlerisamazing · 06/04/2022 21:58

Wear it down at work, ponytail at home. It's poker straight and styling makes bugger all difference so I only blown dry it if it's cold, otherwise I just sort the parting with a comb and let it dry on the tube 🤷‍♀️

Scarby9 · 06/04/2022 22:02

I brush it at home, comb it if I'm out.
During lockdown I cut it into a short layered bob, and it basically looks after itself.
I'm in a rut too, but quite happy in it

ArabeI · 06/04/2022 23:25

Mine is around waist length now, as I decided to let it grow, and I've just realised I don't do much with mine either. Low ponytail or plait mostly. I do have it down but always ready to tie it back if it's windy or the weather changes; raining, extreme heat (frizz you see). I have low ponytail or loose bun for classes/hobby.

I sometimes straighten it for an evening out or similar. Usually plait overnight. Hair oil on ends daily.
