I have a very specific curly/wavy hair product question!

I'm looking for something to put on curly hair after it's dry. I use Boucleme gel, but once it's dried and the cast has broken it can still be a bit fluffy (combo of greys and highlights not helping).

So, something to add shine and definition, and get rid of fluff. Not sticky, not oily, and not heavy.

Would you consider changing your gel?

I don’t find the Boucleme has a hard enough hold and I think it has glycerin which makes my hair a bit fluffy after I’ve broken the cast.

I’ve started using Innersense I create volume- it’s AMAZING followed by Treluxe gel.

I use coconut oil on mine for that same problem. Works very well.

There's a Lush lotion thingy. DD uses it. Can't remember the name but it smells caramel and it's amazing. DD does curly girl method and this just defines her curls.

Have you tried the Only Curls brand. Lovely gel. I also occasionally use a tiny bit of Green People quinoa and avocado hair serum as I scrunch out the crunch.

LucyLoopyLu · 23/03/2022 20:23

Have you tried a tiny bit of curl cream? I can't really use curl cream as my hair is so fine it is too heavy, but I do use it very occasionally as a little "moisturiser" on dry hair when it has got blown about in the wind or I haven't used any gel.
I put a tiny dab on my palm, rub all over my hands and then smooth over my hair (praying hands or finger coiling individual curls).

I would also agree that you might want a stronger hold gel (I use the giovanni).

Also, my hair is very soft and fine and find that leaving in conditioner or deep conditioning is too much for my hair now that I have grown out the colour and heat damage - it makes my hair soft and fuzzy / frizzy when it's dry - although if yours is silvers etc it might be more because it's stubborn hair that wants to break free (in which case the gel is the better idea) 🤣

Curly products are so tricky.

One day soon someone will make a small fortune starting a “try on” bar to find your ideal product.

Not helpful, I know, but it’s my dream. Smile

Totally! My hair is a fickle beast.

Cantu curl creme.

When you touch it, it's all the things you didn't want - sticky, heavy - but it just disappears into dry hair and makes it soft and lovely.

CurlsandCurves · 23/03/2022 20:40

Is it the yellow or purple gel you’re using? The purple one is a lot stronger.

To get shine I’m using argan oil. Just a little bit in my hands and I gently scrunch it in.

I found Cantu Curl creme left a residue on my hair that built up.

CurlsandCurves · 23/03/2022 20:42

@Thoosa I hear you, shall we put a Dragons Den pitch together?

Sexnotgender · 23/03/2022 20:42

Have you tried lube?

Worth a try. Grin

CurlyWurly41 · 23/03/2022 20:59

I second OnlyCurls. I use the curl crème, gel and occasionally the strong hold gel for really fluffy days. I love it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/03/2022 21:02

Larry King A Social Life For Your Hair is light and quite good for frizzy fine curls, expensive but there’s a travel size to try

Actually I used to have Schwarzkopf anti frizz cream in the past which was also good, I might try that again as a lot cheaper

RaisinforBeing · 23/03/2022 21:07

Aveda be Curly lotion. I must be on my 50th bottle

jowly · 23/03/2022 21:18

Percy and Reid No oil hair oil is good for adding definition to dry curls

Fossilsmorefossils · 23/03/2022 21:42

I really like Sebastien molding mudd. You only need a little bit but it makes my fine hair more curly and they stay more together. It's like a wax but then one that actually works without being plasticy or buttery.

Blueberryblueberry · 23/03/2022 21:55

You need lube Grin it's cheap and curly girl friendly (if you follow the rules). I use the boots one in a pump bottle but I think any will work - KY etc. Basically acts as a serum. Either that or aloe Vera gel?

Laquila · 23/03/2022 22:52

Excellent thread! I have a similar problem - grey and highlights definitely doesn't help, you're right! I really struggle to get a cast with anyway nowadays, or at least not one that lasts. I do quite like the LA Strong Hold Styling Gel and I've heard good things about the Innersense range that someone else mentioned for curls.

MummytoCSJH · 23/03/2022 22:56

I also really like the innersense gel

PickAChew · 23/03/2022 22:59

Change your gel. The boucleme stuff is awful I find. I've also found that technique is just as important. Whatever gel and/or leave in is agreeing with my hair, this month, I need to layer it in with lots of water.

PickAChew · 23/03/2022 23:06

My favourite, at the moment, is the treluxe gel. I get awful build up with it, though, so can only use it every other wash. I'm alternating with the remains of various other bottles and tubs. Great curls today from cantu custard but that's loaded with glycerine. In the summer months, I get great results from a combo of ecoslay rice pudding and jello shot.

PickAChew · 23/03/2022 23:07

Great curls today from cantu custard but that's loaded with glycerine... So often leads to a poofy mop!

FolornLawn · 24/03/2022 06:38

I've woken up to so many tips! Thank you, I'll investigate all of them.

Interesting that I should try a different gel with a stronger hold. I think in my mind 'stronger' means 'more likely to be sticky', but obviously I'm wrong.

Cantu has been too heavy for me, but maybe I used the wrong product.

I haven't tried lube on my hair, but on more fluffy days I might whack it with a fish slice, if that counts. Do you just scrunch it into dry hair?

GeneLovesJezebel · 24/03/2022 06:49

I find that the more I do, the worse the curl is. So now I just run a drop of LOreal oil through when wet and leave it to dry. That’s how I get my best curl. Curly Girl products didn’t give me as good a curl.
