Alternative to dress and leggings?

I'm in a bit of a rut, put a lot of weight on and I live in leggings and dresses with a cardigan and doc martens or converse. I've tried midi dresses but they draw attention to my chunky ankles.

I'm not even 30 but feel really frumpy, I'm a size 18, 5ft8, all my weight is around my stomach and I have a csection overhang which makes jeans look awful. I'm working on the weight but will take time.

For most of my life I've dressed alternative / goth / 50s rockabilly but I don't suit that now at this weight, and I am up for trying something totally different.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to look nice but also be comfortable?

Following because I’m in the same rut - although l do find midi dresses work with my DMs and a biker jacket

Culottes or 7/8 trousers -wear with socks and long boots in the winter.
Cotton ones with sandals or flipflops in the summer.
Then skim the wobbly bits nicely and are really comfortable .
Fuck cankles, no one cares !

Wrinklepicker where do you get your midi dresses from? Maybe I just need to buy better quality? The ones I've tried are from the new look curve range

I wear 7/8, culottes, white trainers, any top really goes. Biker jacket, denim jacket.
I've yet to meet anyone who wears this MN uniform of dress & leggings, it's unflattering on most people.

I have a few midi dresses - my favourite was in the sale in Monsoon, and another is Joe Browns but it hasn’t washed especially well, despite being flattering. I tend to flick through the John Lewis sale section

You sound like a similar build to me. I like to dress alternative/goth too. I wear leggings if I want to be comfy or my trusty skinny jeans. Just have to hold in the C-section tum Grin I like an online store called EMP, I buy a lot of t-shirts and tops from there that are long enough to come to the top of my legs and skim rather than cling to my middle. Liking the sound of 7/8 trousers in a lighter fabric, summer can be a bit sweaty in skinnies!
