What does a mid 40's, Peri menopausal, ex-party animal wear to feel like partying again?

All my life I have always loved to socialise. Loved catching up with friends, partying & dancing.

So obvs things have slowed down lots since having kids and even more so in the lockdown. And my waistline has definitely expanded 🙈

Now, parties are happening again & I realise that I have been avoiding certain social situations because I've put on weight - size 18 & not showing any signs of shrinkage 😬🥲

I have LITERALLY GOT NOTHING TO WEAR!!!!

What on earth can I buy which will be mega flattering & also make me look supercool???

Please help an ageing party animal out 🙏🙏🙏

Would you say you were an apple or a pear shape?

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 19/03/2022 19:08

Probably more apple than pear. Huge boobs from HRT 🙈
I'm tall.

Will I just have to stay in forever? 🤷‍♀️

Absolutely not!!

I'm an apple and the difficulty is in emphasising your slimmer bits without looking top heavy. I always think it's 'unfair' that it's much easier for someone with big hips and bum but a neat top half to dress in a flattering way. Plus the big boobs mean you always struggle to get tops that will accommodate you without making you look like a tent.

You do have an advantage being tall (I'm only 5'4) and long legs will always look slimmer, especially if your weight is on your top half.

I find going for very straight up and down dresses/tops works well as they show off your narrow hips, but, as long as they are not too fitted they avoid the 'inverted triangle' look.

With long legs, jeans are always going to look good - go for a lower-rise to avoid the cut-in-half look with a bigger tummy.

I find wrap tops flattering on my big boobs. Keeping tops in plain colours with a lighter coloured or patterned bottom is balancing.

A 'statement necklace' is a good option for drawing attention up from your boobs.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 20/03/2022 12:22

Oh god does HRT make your boobs bigger? 😭

OP you have my sympathy, I'm a similar shape, fucking huge tits, bit of a belly, neat hips and bum, toned legs. I look so bloody top heavy all the time, or I look huge because everything looks the same size as my boobs. I'm struggling to find tops that will accommodate my boobs without being too loose around my hips now.

No help apart from V-necks being a godsend.

I really like ganni for grown up coolness. You can easy fit in to their midis. Or find house of bamboo on insta if you want to live your middle-aged best life.

Wear a print/shape you really love. Don't worry about "flattering", just do you.

But one dress that's £150 and love it to death rather than buying five "meh" outfits.

SilverHairedCat · 23/03/2022 22:41

Have a look at the wrap dresses on Never Fully Dressed - they go up to a 24 in their curve range.

I’m a similar shape and age to you, and my favourite outfits just now are:

  1. A deep scoop neck wide leg jumpsuit in a heavy black jersey with flat black and gold pumps,
  2. A maxi pleated animal print skirt with a slash neck black t shirt and trainers,
  3. An above the neck floral smock dress with my denim jacket and ankle boots.
I don’t know if I’m fashionable or not though!
Hatinafield · 23/03/2022 23:03

Above the knee, not neck Grin

Tigofigo · 24/03/2022 00:20

Depends what you mean by supercool but your hair can make a massive difference.

I like Monki for prints and jumpsuits.

Tigofigo · 24/03/2022 00:28

A friend of mine with similar sounding figure looked fab the other day in leather leggings, chunky boots, flowy strappy top and long line blazer.

MovinOnUp · 24/03/2022 00:40

V-necked, Wide legged jumpsuit.

I've ordered a jumpsuit. Not convinced it won't make me look like a huge bag!

Now for some trainers & a haircut!

HRT has made bugger all difference to mine, which are as minuscule as they have always been, sadly.
