help! I need to buy a mauve silk or silky scarf for MIL

MIL has a big birthday approaching so I asked her what she would like. She said a plain, mauve, square-type scarf (she didn't specify silk but she means that kind of silky look) to accessorise a dress she has.

I just had a look on the Liberty website, which is obvs the go-to place for scarves for MILs for big birthdays, but I think plain mauve scarves must not be in this year!

By a quick Google I can see all sorts of mauve scarves on Amazon etc - but I don't want to show up with a scarf from Amazon!

Has anyone got any hot tips on where I should look - or nice brands? We could sensibly go up to about £100, say. I could go into central London to buy something, or buy online.

Advice welcome, mauve lovers!

Turtle doves do lovely cashmere scarfs if that would work? Certainly within that sort of budget. Not silk, but certainly soft and luxurious.

Someone on here recommend kokoon silks the other day for their travel scarves. They’re all so beautiful!

Tk maxx has great designer scarves for reasonable prices.

Grasping · 10/03/2022 07:40

If googling. It may help to use the word ‘purple’ or ‘heather ’ as few people use the word mauve now

Also, you can get some very good condition second hand designer scarves on eBay, they often come with the original box and you’d never know they’d been worn

Thank you very much everyone for the suggestions. Remember when everyone was wearing scarves a few years ago? Eg those ones with skulls on that cost about £200. I can remember going into to Liberty around that time and there was a large array of posh scarves to buy. I went there again today - but many fewer. Same with all the other obvious stores eg M&S, John Lewis etc. The only shop that was doing mauve/lilac/lavender was &Other Stories - quite a few mauve clothes that were actually quite nice and even one scarf, but sadly it was too "neck-towelly" for MIL.

So scarves seem to be out in general and mauve scarves definitely out. Ha. Tonight's job is to look at all the ideas on this thread!

This might be an idea. The silk artist can make stuff to order, so may be able to make something plain or plain ish in mauve.

If it's to go with a particular outfit, the bespoke person mentioned above is a great idea....

I know all the mauve/lilac/lavender/heather lovers out there are dying for an update on the scarf hunt. Blimey this was a tough assignment. As in my post above I looked EVERYWHERE. You should have seen me on Friday traipsing up and down Oxford Street. And Googling until I got RSI. Anyway in the end I narrowed down to two possibles - both with patterns on - which I decided to show MIL a screenshot of, cunningly cutting the price off of the photo so she couldn't see.
Option 1: Liberty

Option 2: Bella Singleton (who I found by Googling)

She chose Option 2 so we will see how it looks when it arrives.

Thanks everyone again for your suggestions
There are lots of great scarf ideas on this thread and I am going to keep an eye on TK Maxx for myself now, plus vintage

What a lovely DiL you are!

Personally, I love the Liberty one

nongnangning · 14/03/2022 14:36

Yes I thought she would go for the Liberty one and she surprised me there.

I'd probably go to John Lewis, Liberty and Fenwicks and have a look in person.

nongnangning · 14/03/2022 16:34

@gonnagetgoing I did! On Friday last week.

I'm surprised there aren't more plain silk scarves around - maybe try Harrods, Harvey Nicks, Selfridges etc?

@nongnangning - oh no!

I am very surprised. Running out of places I think would have them.

I am a bit down on my knowledge of where to buy accessories in London but there must be somewhere does these!

The second one is lovely by the way!
Gonnagetgoing · 14/03/2022 16:41

If she definitely wants a plain scarf you could:-

Buy the mauve silk. Get a dressmaker to make it into a lovely scarf (could be pricey).

Now she's talking about it though I want one! I had a mauve chiffon blouse which a neighbour made for me many years ago - I was going to try to make it but chiffon is a bugger to sew - my DM who I then lived with had to do lots of favours for the NDN but it was stunning!
