God I look dreadful

At the hairdressers and I know those mirrors are close up and not the most flattering but my god I look every one of my 48 years, fat and just very bleurgh.
I can’t shift my post menopausal spare tyre (well if I stopped eating so much I might), but even then I seem to have lost the ability to apply make up effectively and I’ve probably put on at least a stone over lockdown. It’s just a real sucker punch when you see yourself in close up and wonder where/when everything went south 😬. Not sure why I’m posting but any top tips?? I have friends who are my age who look great - those ones tend to be much slimmer so that’s probably a key point.
Please God I end up at least with a decent haircut!

My bathroom mirror makes me look amazing.

I may move into my bathroom

Grasping · 10/03/2022 07:59

…. also, ditch the powder!

Less is more as you age. I wear city block, gel cheek tint, tight line my upper eyelids and lip balm. My brows are tinted and I use a lash serum and tint my lashes. I rarely wear mascara now.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/03/2022 08:06

Ok I probably need a make up tutorial. So, now to find someone patient Grin

I agree. She is very down to earth and normal. They sell great products too. Website and a whole load of tutorials on You Tube too.

These are two of the best things I have bought from her which make such a difference to your face.

Nahhh everyone looks bad at the hairdressers 🤷🏻‍♀️ I always thought I looked like and old wet rat, even in my 20s 😬 and I don't think I'm unfortunate looking otherwise

Deathraystare · 10/03/2022 09:22

Those hairdressers' mirrors are the work of the devil. I look nothing at all like my aunt but that is who was glaring back at me on one hairdresser visit! Her sharp features replaced my 'Mr Staypuft' doughey-ness! How???!

UnconditionalSurrender · 10/03/2022 09:32

I think when you get middle aged you have to concentrate on eyelashes and eyebrows a bit more when you didn't really need to bother when you're younger. Gives a bit of definition. I do eyelash tint and serum and use eyebrow gel and pencil.
How's your skincare? As long as your skin is in tip top condition then you can get away with eye stuff and a bit of concealer or cc cream.
I was in the hairdresser yesterday and they have full length mirrors which make your legs look like giant tree trunks. I always want to cry until they stick a gown on me.

Thank you everyone I’ll check out Beauty and the Boutique. This has all brought a smile to my (haggard) face Smile

I’m 48 too. A woman in my workplace was recently shocked to discover we aren’t the same age. She’s about to turn 60.
But since then I’ve had a fabulous and rather expensive haircut and colour and suddenly feel that I look 48. Which is a vast improvement.

Uptoongirl · 10/03/2022 11:05

Even in my 20s I would slap on extra makeup for the hairdressers! Now, I just leave my glasses at home.

Old, wet rat

Laughing my socks off at this

Juniper68 · 10/03/2022 12:19

@Gatekeeper

I'm going to the hairdressers tomorrow for the first time in umpteen years. I will wipe some Vaseline on my glasses and all will be well

You need to just eat healthy. Only eat things that grow with fish or chicken you can't go wrong Porridge with skimmed milk for breakfast. Things that grow made into soup for lunch the weight will fall off you

ThreeKneeRepeater · 10/03/2022 12:22

I keep a mask on, OP. So much better when only my eyes are seen.
I’ll probably keep wearing one forever. Much cheaper than fillers.

During lockdown, wearing my mask, i was asked several times for proof of age when purchasing alcohol. I am 48.

This, rather than flattering me, made me wonder what the holy fuck is wrong with my mouth if covering it up knocks so many years off me!???

(dont answer!)

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/03/2022 16:21

These responses are cheering me right up Grin.
@collieresponder88 I do eat healthily… I also take on board a lot of home baking so therein lies part of the problem.

Well I went to the hairdressers today and the first thing she said was "can you take your glasses off please"

Reader...Les Dawson as Cissie and Ada looked back at me from the mirror Shock
