What do people wear to go ‘out out’ nowadays?

I feel totally out of touch.

I live quite rurally so tend to dress casually - Sweaty Betty leggings and sweaters at home, dresses and DMs (usually with a sweater over the top) for trips into town or local bars.

I’m going out for dinner and cocktails in Edinburgh on Saturday night. Trendy / upmarket places. The types of places I’ve not been to since pre-covid. What on earth do I wear?

I’m early forties. Size 12ish. Help me not look like a grumpy out-of-towner.

What??

Coffeepot72 · 23/02/2022 07:04

Black ankle grazers, heels and a nice top. Assuming we’re not in the middle of another storm!

DialsMavis · 23/02/2022 07:06

Jumpsuit and nice trainers, or mini skirt, black tights, dressy top and DMs

Wear a smile (to stop looking grumpy Wink).
And just wear what you are comfortable in. If that's jeans and a shirt, fine. No one will bat an eyelid. I'd go for jeans or pleather leggings with a white shirt/nice vest top and a blazer. Boots or heels depending on how far I need to walk/weather!

I'm from Edinburgh originally and it is a source of angst when we go into town with some local friends who think they need a posh outfit.

You'll forget what you're wearing after a few cocktails anyway haha. Have fun!

Hahahah. I wrote ‘frumpy’ and it autocorrected to grumpy Grin

Even high end places in Edinburgh are quite casual op. I wouldn't stress too much.

Nessnext · 23/02/2022 19:35

Keep it casual. Ankle jeans, heeled ankle boots or shoes with nice socks (may not be your thing but I love socks), plain tight top with a colourful open shirt over the top. And some nice layered gold chains. This is pretty much my going out look every time 😄
No one ever 'dresses up' the places I go to.

I'd still wear the dress and chunky boots.

Anything formal, especially heels, looks dated to me now
