Leather jackets, any recommendations?

I've lost about 2.5 stone in the last year, and so I'm trying to invest in decent new pieces to fill my wardrobe, that will hopefully be built to last!

I haven't had a real leather jacket since I was a teen and stole my Dad's 70s-style one from the back of his wardrobe Grin

I have got sort of broad shoulders and big boobs, and I just don't know if there's a particular style that would suit my shape? I have a fake leather biker, but not sure that's the most timeless style, and also the material is so thick I can hardly bend my arms...

Does anyone have any recommendations for a still-chubby 42 year old?

Following with interest.

I have always struggled with leather jackets but absolutely love them!

I hourglass with broad shoulders which means they make my shoulders look even wider!

I'm 10kg down and 5kg more to go and a nice leather jacket is one of my milestone rewards!

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/02/2022 13:21

Have a look in local charity shops, the ones round here always have beautiful real leather jackets for a fraction of the price and most look like they've never been worn, or have a nice aged look. If you do this, look in the mens sections too.

If you'd prefer new, have a look at Lakeland leather?

TheUsualShitshow · 20/02/2022 13:22

Ooh, are you me? Grin

I've just been looking at Hush and All Saints but it seems to be 99% biker style, and I am not convinced that's the most flattering for my shape (although the thinner leather will be much better than the thicker PU stuff I suppose).

I really really WANT an allsaints one but I think the big lapels abs detail emphasise my shoulders and I just look awkward (I haven't given up hope though!)

I do wonder if this type of simplified shape, and with a built in waist, would be a better type to look for. No so classic though!

That is nice! I do think the collar and cleaner lines help to de-emphasise big boobs.

I just really don't think you can beat All Saints. I have three (one was a charity shop bargain though) and they are so comfortable and just improve with wear. Have you actually tried any on?

Maybe also look in Reiss.

TheUsualShitshow · 20/02/2022 16:32

No, I'm nowhere near a decent shopping centre so more likely to have to buy online.

No way would I get anything Reiss over these shoulders Grin

Jaeger have some ( sold through M&S), worth a look perhaps? I’ve got one from a few years ago and it is a wardrobe favourite.

lindyloo57 · 20/02/2022 16:37

I brought the vela allsaints leather jacket last January in the john lewis sale, I am petite with slightly wide shoulders and a full bust, I love it as it haven't got to much zips going on.

SorrelForbes · 20/02/2022 16:39

All Saints Dalby is a lovely, flattering cut. I've got this one from Madewell too and I'm really pleased with it. Massimo Dutti do some nice ones as well.

I'm an hourglass shape with broad shoulders too.

DedalusBloom · 20/02/2022 16:42

I'm short and fat with big boobs and I have an (admittedly pleather, but good pleather) biker jacket which I think looks really good on. ( I just don't do it up.) But then it suits my ageing rock chick look Grin

I think if a biker style is what you want, go for it- I think someone looking authentic in what they want to wear will always look better than wearing something simply because it's "flattering"

They arent all cut the same anyway - some sit much higher or lower on the hips and ones cut to sit at top to mid hip won't fight so much visually with your boobs.

HidingFromDD · 20/02/2022 16:43

I got mine from lakeland, think it's this one
www.lakelandleather.co.uk/toni-leather-biker-jacket-in-black

loved the look of all saints but they just didn't sit right on me (5'3" and size 14-16) and the lakeland one did. Also just the right thickness/heaviness

TheUsualShitshow · 20/02/2022 16:49

Oh thanks everyone, I'm saving all of these recommendations Smile

Another idea - Barneys at ASOS. I have a couple and they're not as beautifully soft as All Saints but they are nice.

Here is one that isn't biker style.

TheUsualShitshow · 20/02/2022 19:58

Oh I really like that, and it's on sale! They don't have a 16 and I reckon that's what I'd need. Hmmm.

OP posts:
Denisov · 20/02/2022 20:03

I had the 16 in that one and returned it. The shoulder's aren't cut very well, you can see in the video that they sit off the model's shoulder. Might be worth a go in the 14 but I didn't find it very flattering at all, very long arms and very wide. HTH

Denisov · 20/02/2022 20:05

sorry not sure where that apostrophe came from!

MistySkiesAfterRain · 21/02/2022 01:02

Oasis on ebay worth a look - they did gorgeous buttersoft leather jackets.

Floisme · 21/02/2022 07:17

If it was me, I'd look for a long line blazer. I've seen some in Zara - pleather so may not be what you want, but Zara are good at spotting new trends before they take hold.
I agree with you about bikers. I thought I liked them until I tried a few and found them really fussy.

TheUsualShitshow · 23/02/2022 20:40

It's all the extraneous zips that annoy me!

Yes, way too much going on for me.
ElegantlyTouched · 23/02/2022 20:47

Another recommendation for Lakeland Leather. Need to look somme weight so my jacket fits again.

TheUsualShitshow · 23/02/2022 20:54

I'm not a fan of the waterfall style, I feel it looks messy and a bit blowsy or something with big boobs.

Will definitely look at Lakeland - Barneys also seem affordable and have some bikers that are a bit less zip-heavy.
