What are your most wanky, pretentious beauty buys?

I'm very guilty of buying very splurge beauty products from time to time. I bought a Jo Malone Myrrh and Tonka shower oil recently, and the Wood Sage body Creme. I also bought a Acqua di Parma body wash last year. Completely lost my mind. I have a Loccitane deodorant which is useless. Smells nice but so shit. What are your most wanky beauty buys?

I bought Dior shower gels years ago to match the perfumes I liked (Addict nd Diorissimo). Of course, like a fool I decided that they were too nice to use more than once in a blue moon and they went off! One ended up with no smell and the other just smelled icky. So that was a good waste of money! Lesson learned.

Shower gels from Loccitane and Molton Brown. Literally money going down the drain.

Expensive Shea butter toilet paper. Again literally money down the toilet!

Biologique Recherche P50 lotion. It did nothing for my skin.

Chanel no 5

I have a good few extremely cheap shower gels to make up for the expensive ones. I love Molton Brown too. Not sure how I feel about spending the money on them, it's gone in 5 seconds but I enjoy them at the same time so I'm torn.

15ml of EGF anti-aging serum for £130 Shock

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2022 23:38

An expensive bottle of a discontinued perfume I'd been craving for years but never actually smelled. I bought it based on rave online reviews, and I generally love vintage style perfumes so thought it was a safe buy. It initially smelled of roses - so far so good - then morphed into a distinct aroma of horse with a side note of pungent urine. Urrgh.

Was it a Guerlain one? I nearly bought one of those on the first sniff then uncharacteristically had the sense to leave it for half an hour and reassess. It smelled like a farmyard and apparently it was deliberate! The fragrance note was called Indole or something.

L'Occitane Almond body oil after I read that almond oil stopped you getting stretch marks when pregnant. To be far, I don't have any stretch marks, but I could have just used non-wanky almond oil.

DramaAlpaca · 13/02/2022 00:22

@Iamthewombat no, it was Joy by Jean Patou. I'm intrigued as to which Guerlain had the eau de farmyard note, so I know to avoid it!

Iamthewombat · 13/02/2022 00:42

Jicky. More like sicky!

DramaAlpaca · 13/02/2022 00:49

Oh I agree! I don't find Jicky pleasant all, definitely farmyardy. I've a small sample of it and don't like it at all. Lots of people must love it though as it's been around since 1889. I love some of the early Guerlains but not that one.

For me some l’occitane stuff in their winter sale, Dior mascara, lip pencil chubby and bliusher and silver eyeliner Christmas last year. Love mascara, blusher (like Nars orgasm) but others not good at all!

I don’t really buy other stuff like White Company, Molton Brown etc now as have bought them and they’re overrated I think.

FelicityFlops · 13/02/2022 07:33

Venn all-in-one concentrate and cleanser. It is expensive, I thought I had fallen for the advertising blurb, but it absolutely works for me.
Additional benefit is being able to ditch everything else.

LefttoherownDevizes · 13/02/2022 07:39

Chanel and Tom Ford perfume. I have two bottles of each.

Wanky cos I can’t wear perfume as it triggers migraine (same for my poor family too) yet I buy scent just in case it doesn’t. Then am gutted when it does Confused

I’ve been guilty of buying many a Molton brown handwash too which is a waste given how quickly is 5 get through it

GeneLovesJezebel · 13/02/2022 07:41

8 hour cream. Stinks, such a waste of money.

Chocomelon · 13/02/2022 08:42

I've bought so many make up and cosmetic items that I've made quite a bit of money back selling them brand new in Vinted but it makes me a bit embarrassed how much I just have spent on stuff I don't need. I still have loads too.
