Inspired by the expensive products that are a waste of money thread….

What cheaper, high street beauty switches would you recommend? I could do with saving some money!

@Takenoprisoner

Those who use Elf putty primer, is it suitable for normal to dry skin?
You dry all over? I only tend to use it where I’m a bit oily, they have a matte one m, poreless and illuminating, maybe the illuminating one might work for dryer skin?
JFM27 · 17/01/2022 21:41

Aldi eyeshadow pallettes look like the Benefits one fab colours way cheaper than Benefit 5.99.Revolution retinol serum 9.99.And M&S rose scented cleansing balm a dead ringer for Elimis.

Benjispruce5 · 17/01/2022 21:50

The Ordinary hyalaronic acid is about ÂŁ5.
I use Lacura Caviar day cream over the top and my skin feels great. Smells nice too.
Recently started using No 7 illuminator primer which is really good. Not used primers much before but this gives a radiance through my foundation.

Benjispruce5 · 17/01/2022 21:52

Oh and after finished a gift of Liz Earle hot cloth cleanser, I continued using the hot cloth with a much cheaper cleanser or just hot water and it still does the job at at removing makeup and gently exfoliating.

Takenoprisoner · 17/01/2022 21:53

@Kanfuzed123

I'm normal to dry I would say, not oily at all, so I might try the illuminating one. Thanks

NeedWineNow · 17/01/2022 22:08

I've just bought the Lacura Vitamin C and Pineapple Hot Cloth cleansers. I have read some very good reviews so am looking forward to trying them.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/01/2022 22:53

For years I used Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair religiously. In lockdown last year when counters were closed I picked up the Inkey List HA in Boots as a stopgap, and would never go back - it’s £6.

MangoLipstick · 18/01/2022 18:07

Nyx lip liners
Wet & Wild megaglo blush stick
Milani baked blushers - not super cheap but certain colours are amazing dupes for brands like Nars/Mac/Two Faced.
The online shop Beauty Bay also do their own brand of make up, I bought a load in the sale and so impressed!

BumBurnerBum · 18/01/2022 18:15

I am using the Boots Glow pink moisturiser and pineapple serum and really like them so will be getting more from that range soon.

Benjispruce5 · 18/01/2022 19:25

I’m liking No7 tinted lip balm. A really decent amount of colour. I got caramel which is redder than it sounds.

NeedWineNow · 19/01/2022 13:33

Early days yet, but am very impressed with the Lacura Pineapple Hot Cloth cleanser. Makes my face feel really soft. Tried it on my (closed) eyes last night and it took off Benefit's Bad Gal mascara easily without making my eyes sore like the Liz Earle one used to.

bippityboppity87 · 19/01/2022 14:09

Safflower oil. I bought a big bottle on Amazon relatively cheaply, but I can imagine you can buy it in most places. I put it on my face at night. Can also use it on your hair and body. It's non-comedogenic, so it doesn't clog your pores and I have lovely smooth skin when I wake up

Collection lasting perfection concealer, just under a fiver

Éclat victim c and hyaluronic serum

Inthesameboatatmo · 21/01/2022 12:23

Primark 1 pound mascara and poundland pressed powder.
Know it's not a beauty item but poundland laundry liquid is surprisingly good.

Deathraystare · 22/01/2022 07:56

@Appalonia

Don't want to worry you but I remember reading somewhere a week or so back that Wilco may be closing down! I had bought too much in Primark but had planned to go into Wilco afterwards so cannot say if it is deffo happening.

They’re closing some stores - there was a list in the news a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if the entire business is closing down.

catwithflowers · 22/01/2022 09:56

I use E45 cream, the one in a tub, as a night time moisturiser for my dry skin. Works a treat and is super cheap

Appalonia · 22/01/2022 11:51

Just checked to see if my local Wilcox is closing down, phew it's not! But will stock up on some things just in case...

JessicaJacket · 22/01/2022 11:59

I also use the Ordinary serums (Niacinamide and Zinc and Hyaluronic Acid). I don't buy any other serums anymore.

Cerave daily moisturiser with SPF for daytime and Nivea Soft at night time.

The only skincare things I currently use which are more expensive are cleansers / make up removers. Need to find cheaper versions of those.

Make up, I have had good results with No 7. Not buying the pricier stuff anymore.

MrsBrodie · 22/01/2022 12:07

I've treated myself to the Superdrug Nadine Baggott winter edit as it is currently down to ÂŁ20. I've only being using it for a week but my skin is looking and feeling better, and I have had absolutely no reactions to anything. I have only tried the retinol once though. I'll happily buy all of the items again.

I've recently been bought the Estee Lauder stuff and the I'm not feeling the love. I don't think I'd but it myself so I'm interested in your alternative.
hivemindneeded · 22/01/2022 14:15

Nivea Q10 day cream and pore cream. ÂŁ10 but very often half price somewhere.

Garnier rose sensitive skin cleansing lotion. About ÂŁ3.50 and also often on half price.

Rimmel eye palette in neutrals. About ÂŁ7 for 9 good quality powder eye shadows.

Faith in Nature lavender and geranium foam bath. around ÂŁ5 but smells like Neal's Yard at four times the price. And it is so gentle and soft on the skin. I'm completely converted.

Neverknowinglyunderfed · 22/01/2022 14:16

Skincare - CeraVe is really impressive. Never had a dud product from them but particularly like their hydrating cleanser and face moisturiser.
Can't go wrong with La Roche Posay either.
Makeup - to be honest mostly prefer higher end but L'oreal bases are very good. I think the infallible one is brilliant. And I really Revlon lip products.

Neversaygoodbye · 22/01/2022 14:38

I really rate No7 cleansing balm in the tub, just as good as Clinique TTDO in my opinion. Doesn't sting my eyes and removes all makeup.

JessicaJacket · 22/01/2022 14:42

That's good to know re the No 7 cleansing balm. Will give that a go when I run out

Dinnertime22 · 22/01/2022 17:29

I have been really impressed with the Boots own brand ingredients range. The vit C is excellent. It is normally on offer.
