Jumpsuit: how much to chop off the length? And what shoes would you wear with it?

Hello S&Bers, I've just taken delivery of this jumpsuit which looks better in real life:

www.johnlewis.com/jigsaw-zebra-devore-velvet-jumpsuit-blue/p5808565

It's very long (even on me and I'm 5'8) and I'm going to have to take it up. Any ideas of what footwear I could wear with it? It's for a dressy 50th birthday at a posh venue. Can't decide between some kind of court shoe, pretty flats, or ankle boots with a small heel. I'm not in the least bit stylish so please feel free to tell me if that will look terrible.

Even with heels, would you have it long and almost floor length (a la 90s) or ankle length?

Id go for heels and keep the legs very long.
Id love to suit something like that, have a great party

The highest heels you can possibly bear, moderately pointy but discreet (the shoes are not the main event here, you want as much hight as possible without seeing much of the shoe) and keep the length almost grazing the floor whilst wearing the shoes. Get them shortened professionally or if you intended to do it yourself, get someone else to pin the hem until you are 100% happy- there's a lot to stitch so you only want to do it once.
If they end up a bit too long for lower heels in case you want to wear it again, use a belt and hoist it up a bit if there is enough room.
I find it drapes better the longer the legs are and you get more of a flow as you move.
I dislike 95% of jumpsuits, but a really nice one makes my day. I love this one. Enjoy wearing it!

Something like this
, or the £215 Russell & Bromley version

Thanks, all! Yes, my problem is that I'm not great in heels. I've ordered a couple of pairs to totter experiment around the house in.

Do you think flats would look dreadful?

And yes, I'll definitely have it taken up professionally. I know where my skills lie and it's not in sewing!

Eg this kind of flat shoe?

With the legs cut to this length:

Or would that totally ruin it?

The flat sandals are very pretty but too flat.
I'd wear a heel and keep the jumpsuit long

Amelion · 11/01/2022 10:41

I agree high heels. Get the heels you like first and then get the length taken up to suit the heels.

Amelion · 11/01/2022 10:42

The picture you’ve shared of the other jumpsuit is a different material; I’m not sure the Jigsaw one would fall the same way as the material looks less structured. It would just look weird and floppy around that cropped length.

AuntieDolly · 11/01/2022 10:42

What about some platform Mary-Janes?

crispinglovershighkick · 11/01/2022 11:21

That's a gorgeous jumpsuit but be mindful of wearing pointy shoes and/or heels with long, wide hems. I had a couple of spectacular falls when younger, including going down a flight of concrete stairs on my arse (no alcohol involved) when either the toe or heel of one shoe caught in the opposite hem. Ruined more than one evening.
If you're not a heels person OP those flats are lovely. Or a platform would look great too.

Boood · 11/01/2022 12:44

I think those gold flats would be perfect, that’s the kind of style I’d go for. Hobbling around in pain isn’t stylish. Not being able to walk naturally isn’t stylish.

jeaux90 · 11/01/2022 13:07

If you are up for investing in a really comfortable platform sandal I'd have a look at Chie Mihara shoes. I can wear those high platforms all day.

Palavah · 11/01/2022 13:08

Clarks and debenhams both have silver block heels with a lower heel height. Try them?

HemHelp · 11/01/2022 13:49

Thanks, all. S&B is hands down the best board on MN 😊

I've decided to send it back - the heels thing is making me feel anxious, especially as I'd like the option of changing into some flats for dancing. I omitted to mention a key piece of info, which is that there's going to be a ceilidh. I've rediscovered a lovely dress in my wardrobe (which was given the stamp of approval by this very board about 3 years ago under a different name*) so that will be better for my bank balance (and possibly my actual balance when it comes to the heels Wink).

*I can usually get dressed without checking first with MN, honest!

Hah good decision @HemHelp! Dancing in heels and wide leg trousers sounds dangerous Grin
