Tons of makeup but never wear it anyone else

Pixiedust3x · 31/12/2021 22:05

Not much point of this thread other than I wonder if there are other people like me who keep buying makeup excessively but never wear it. I know it's wasteful but something that makes me happy.
Most people I know who don't wear makeup are the ones who dont own so much and the ones who do own a lot wear a lot. Im too lazy and think will wear it when I go somewhere nice or when I have proper time to do a nice look but never happens. I don't even wear mascara or a lipstick. Then I go through this phase of regret that I shouldn't have bought so much. Am I the only one or other people do this also?

Just wear a bit of makeup every day?

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 31/12/2021 22:08

I don’t do this. I used to have loads of makeup but when I started getting into minimalism I got rid of almost all of it. I now have one makeup bag with just the things I use, and no duplicates.

Innocenta · 31/12/2021 22:12

Me. I love makeup, love beauty content, have way too much of the stuff, etc... But am still bloody shielding and it always just feels like too much faff to put it on! I also feel like, why put anything on my skin when I can leave it bare and no one even sees it? But I wish I had more motivation to do makeup at home.

Lennon80 · 31/12/2021 22:17

I do this - buy shades of new lipsticks and all colour of the rainbow eyeshadows I never wear! When they stopped testers due to covid I bought loads that were way off! I tend to hand a lot of them to friends teen girls when I finally admit they were a pointless purchase. It does cheer me up too though as does new facecreams etc - have boxes to last me years!

mobear · 31/12/2021 22:20

I do this now but didn’t used to. Lockdown/ WFH has given me much less incentive to bother. My skin is thanking me for it though.

CheeseMmmm · 31/12/2021 22:22

OP! It's all ok. Don't feel bad!

I've got stacks. Including some I bought in the 80s Grin

I used to buy things I knew would never use. I think it's a real mix of things-

  • Feels like a luxury which is affordable
  • Covetable colourful little things that don't take up much space and are sort of nice to dig through from time to time when reason comes to wear some
  • Aspirational.
I'll buy this eyeliner and it'll be really good and inspire me to do makeup more. And then naturally I'll bother with hair and getting more fancy done up. And then I'll go around feeling confident happy serene, which in turn will lead to a generally more together life where I manage to get family to be really tidy and everyone can easily find pair of socks without holes, and I'll be so on it I'll get fab new job, and everything will be fabulous. Yep. I'll buy the eyeliner. New start!
  • I for one enjoy browsing makeup. I really like colours! And it's all sort of snazzy.
Just realised. I have always enjoyed browsing stationery esp pens. And I love art shops, the rows of paint tubes with different colours, tins with pastels in little cute paper wrapped sticks of gorgeous colours presented beautifully... Just realised that, makeup is same really!

Nah don't feel bad. Totally understandable to buy for what is, if you think about it!

Lennon80 · 31/12/2021 22:24

CheeseMmmm

I used to love browsing and buying stationary too!!

Returnoftheowl · 31/12/2021 22:31

I've pretty much stopped wearing makeup since covid (seems like a lot of effort to then put a mask over half my face). I've stopped buying more, but I've still got more than I'll likely wear any time soon.

CheeseMmmm · 31/12/2021 22:35

And since last march well it's all a bit weird anyway.

I work in office in area predominantly men in suits, hair smart, tie, fancy watch, clean shaven/ neat beard etc, women loads styled hair, makeup, fancy shoes whether flat heel or boot, often posh coat not anorak etc etc...

Home working.
Mostly tees and trackies all round, fancy watches /makeup/ etc etc. Nope! Hair meh. No one wears shoes any more... Etc.

IME very few people do unless reason.

It's fine OP! Enjoy your makeup makes you feel happy.. unless can't afford obv.
Or you are buying inordinate amounts.

CheeseMmmm · 31/12/2021 22:38

@Lennon80

CheeseMmmm

I used to love browsing and buying stationary too!!

When I realised it was essentially same thing I relaxed a bit.

I think makeup there's the weight of adverts, social ideas about women and how we look, all sorts going on that makes it different somehow to buying a nice pen, that when start using don't really like, and put away and use comfy cheap pen instead!

Lennon80 · 31/12/2021 22:41

Even the way they set up the stock in places like Superdrug means I can’t go and buy shampoo etc without being drawn in

CheeseMmmm · 01/01/2022 01:38

For me too.

It's v pleasant to browse, tactile (pre covid!). Pick up peer at put back. Maybe open- twist, snap, slide, flip. Colourful- I look pick up/ look at nail varnish lipstick eye stuff because like colours, but not colours I would ever wear!

In posher brands, the tray displays with 50 colours. Of course they draw in!

Like I say, when realised do same with pens paint etc. Thought oh! Obviously I like looking makeup, same thing!

And it's an affordable, satisfying purchase with the internal idea not entirely frivolous as will get use....

Yep unless out of control/ can't afford. Why not? A small thing that makes feel happy.

No need for guilt at all IMO!

MamaWeasel · 01/01/2022 01:43

Nope, my makeup bag is very minimalistic, it doesn't bring me joy at all. My notebook collection, however, is another story!

CheeseMmmm · 01/01/2022 02:21

Oooh stationery!

Sorry minimalist makeup bag or not,

You're One Of Us Grin

Alayalaya · 01/01/2022 02:29

It’s wishful thinking. I buy makeup because I want to have the sort of life where I need makeup - because I go places and people see me and it matters what I look like. But that’s never going to happen. The makeup just sits there unused.

astorsback · 01/01/2022 05:49

Ive got three drawers full of make-up.

I'm always so disappointed with it. All the dewy/glossy/radiant stuff just looks matt on me. Charlotte Tilbury, YSL, Sisley, Trinny London, Becca, Benefit, Laura Mercia, its all the same.

The problem is lack of samples. I dont live near a city, plus, all make up seems designed for people with a medium skin tone, brown hair and brown eyes. Its difficult to find suitable shades for natural blondes.

NoodleSlurper · 01/01/2022 05:57

Me! Never made the connection with stationery before but it definitely applies to me.

Hotyogahotchoc · 01/01/2022 07:11

I used to buy lots of make up and don't any more but I still have a lot and I have barely worn any for nearly two years when the pandemic hit

I work from home mostly and now I'm on mat leave so I just use a bit of under eye concealer, mascara and brow powder. Sometimes as well but mostly not.

I've managed not to buy any for a while.

Hotyogahotchoc · 01/01/2022 07:12

I have some stuff unopened that I got from Charlotte Tilbury Black Friday last year (2020) and others so I'm tempted to get rid of the stuff that's been open for ages and just keep the new bits

It takes up space too

Bussinbussin · 01/01/2022 07:21

I'm not too bad but definitely have more than I need and quite a few things which I never wear but can't bear to throw out because they're too pretty/expensive.

I like the idea of just making an effort to use it all up - might do that on WFH days just to look a bit more polished than my usual bare faced Teams look!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/01/2022 08:32

I wear make up and do my hair for me, whether I'm at home alone all day or not. Wear the stuff!

Middleagedfrog · 01/01/2022 08:36

Yes, I'm similar. I'm going to try and not buy any this year and use what I have. I wear it most days but never seem to finish anything.
If I do buy anything it's not going to be a premium brand because they just disappoint more than the cheap stuff . I have a Lisa Eldridge lipstick and it is just as uncomfortable as most of the other lipsticks I have worn over the years.

Mercurial123 · 01/01/2022 08:37

No I can fit all my makeup in one small cosmetics bag.

Pixiedust3x · 01/01/2022 14:50

@CheeseMmmm u have explained it! Looking at it all is such a joy all colours look amazing. When I knew boots and superdrug only l only had 1 makeup bag. It's when I started watching YouTube beauty videos years ago I became familiar with so many brands I didnt know exist and not even in the UK. Even as an adult its easier to get influenced to buy stuff that u never gonna use.

@Alayalaya I know what ure saying to buy makeup thinking u gonna need it for something special but in day to day life u think its a bit pointless putting it on. I also think I'd take my time and do a certain eye look for some occasion but my eyeshadows just sit there.

Good on you @BatshitCrazyWoman for using and enjoying it. I like the idea of putting makeup at home or for quick trip to the shop etc but I at the time I think it's too much effort.

@astorsback the lack of samples is a problem and sales people can't always be trusted. The amount of times I've eneded up with foundations that are too pink and orange concealers. Personally I prefer indie brands, those are far more interesting and their glossy/dewy stuff, highlighters, blushes everything is much better in my opinion (even someone who doesn't wear makeup much can make it work). Typical brands like the ones owned by loreal are still stuck back in time. They don't seem to care that 1 or 2 shades of under eye highlighter isn't gonna suit everyone. But most brands are waking up to the fact that not all people are same colour. It used to be ridiculous, about 10 shades of fair to light, 2 or 3 medium which all look the same and 1 or 2 darker shades.
