All tips and hints welcome please. Just at the planning stage; September wedding. My thoughts are:
Wait for colour scheme
Lose 2 stone - am 5'7"
Find out what the MoB is wearing and do not under any circumstances upstage the MoB.
My style is fairly classic, no frills, lace, chiffony things.
Would silk narrow trousers and very simple top with tunic style light coat be acceptable instead of dress and coat? That's become my go to for evening things/the opera.

That sounds fine, I wore a purple and grey crinkle dress and a matching bolero to my son's wedding. I was far more formally dressed than th brides mum. It didn't really matter as her mum felt comfortable in her dress and all attention was on the bride and groom, my counterpart is a really lovely woman and a great MiL to my son

Your outfit idea sounds lovely. DS1 got married in August and if I was taller I would have loved to have worn trousers.

I got my outfit from Nigel Rayment in Manchester with the help of the lovely Sean. They also have a store in London if either of those locations are helpful. Their website also gives useful tips about how to go about choosing an outfit.
Good luck with the search!

Beebumble2 · 30/12/2021 13:22

That sounds a good choice. I’d look for a coordinating coat that has some interest such as appliqué or embroidery.
Have a look on the Shibumi site, expensive but will give ideas.

WhiteXmas21 · 30/12/2021 13:26

Your outfit sounds lovely , and it’s so thoughtful of you to consider MOB. Wish you’d been around to style my MIL, who wore a hat so large it’s partly cut out of several photos.😂

RosesAndHellebores · 30/12/2021 13:30

@Beebumble2 - thank you for the Shibumi recommendation. Worth a trip to Gloucs I think and the right price point.

I almost went with Shibumi but ended up in a Marc Cain dress that I loved when I saw a pal wearing it as a wedding guest. Wore a nice hat and was toned colourwise with the MoB by coincidence but that was quite nice.
My advice is stick with your own style - MoB and MoG stuff in standard pastel chiffon was definitely not for me.

@latedecember1963 the Nigel Rayment dresses are very beautiful but they aren't really me.

That sounds lovely. As mum of 2 boys though I'd let MOB have first dibs on a colour but I'm not going to worry about upstaging!

RosesAndHellebores · 30/12/2021 13:46

Oh I agree @katienana which is why I want to navigate this with delicacy. Having said that she's taller than me, thinner than me and 8 years younger so is holding the trump cards.

My go to for very special occasions and evening wear is Caroline Charles but I am very conscious that is likely to be OTT.

I've never heard of Shibumi, but having had a quick look what gorgeous colours and fabric. 😍 My SiL would love their style.

bouncydog · 30/12/2021 14:30

@RosesAndHellebores - same predicament but MOB. Don't do dresses and floaty stuff so going for Shibumi silk jacket and getting silk trousers and top made locally. Nice bag and sandals and ready to go. Also intend to be hatless as otherwise will look like a mushroom!

I've been looking for months for early June wedding and have my appointment booked as short so will need bespoke!! I think a jacket just giving some rear end coverage is what I will go for!

RosesAndHellebores · 30/12/2021 19:02

The world's your oyster as the mother of the bride @bouncydog. I shall definitely wear a hat of some sort. I love hats. Men have it so much easier.

@RosesAndHellebores Lalarge Beaumont is another site with several choices of trousers/jackets/coats.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/12/2021 00:01

Gorgeous coats @bouncydog. If the tweed teal number were available in a 16 I'd have ordered it for now!

Oh my !
I went on the Shibami website - Princess Anne in the Vera in midnight blue.
I didn't think they would "advertise" like that.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/07/2022 21:31

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that @LadyEloise1.

In the end I did go for lace because September could be warm or autumnal and for the former the frock will work on its own and for the latter I have tunic type coat to wear with it that will get years and years of wear with trousers afterwards or as an evening coat over black.

21lb down so far.

I think the Shibumi stuff is lovely.
