Anyone feel sad that they don’t want anything from the sales?

I usually love the January sales. All the gorgeous knitwear and boots and cashmere scarves. I can’t wait.

But this year there is nothing I want! Nothing to get excited about or plan an outfit around. It’s depressing. There are some quite stylish things out there but nah can’t be arsed.

Why?! Is it just me? Has it been a dull season?

Perhaps a silver lining could be that you are experiencing contentment with what you already have?
Could this be an opportunity to appreciate the relief of not wanting?
You are also not contributing to the normalisation of gratuitous consumption, of acquisition for its own sake, thus having a positive impact on the environment and the climate.
I think it is a cause for celebration!

Haggisfish3 · 29/12/2021 00:01

Actually it feels great to not want to buy anything!

LiterallyKnowsBest · 29/12/2021 00:02

Not sad but - odd. I usually love the sales, after stalking particular items for months.

But this year I’m all too aware that the things I bought last year have barely made it out of the wardrobe. And nothing’s falling apart through wear and tear (apart from home clothes) so I almost have too much.

It’s just pointless until normal life resumes.

strong80 · 29/12/2021 00:04

i have only bought some gym gear. mostly because that’s all i seem to wear now and most of the dressy things i bought to wear over the festivities haven’t actually been out the house yet.

leccybill · 29/12/2021 00:06

All these long evenings to browse and I don't feel the desire to buy anything at all. It all feels a bit 'what's the point'.

PersonaNonGarter · 29/12/2021 00:06

Definitely content with what I have and have never been a high-volume consumer of clothes. More like I lust after things, save and then get excited when I can get them.

I like fashion as a hobby and an art form. Missing being inspired I suppose.

God there are lots of frumpy horrible styles and fabrics out there. So much looks like a middle aged mum from M and S in the 80s. And everything is either at the cheaper end and recycled plastic or so-called designer stuff that is poor quality at truly shocking prices. I just hate clothes shopping these days. It’s just all so meh.

LiterallyKnowsBest · 29/12/2021 00:29

Goodness, CurlyhairedAssassin - where on earth are you looking? (Btw my own mother was middle-aged in the 80s - and always looked fabulous!)

I frankly love clothes and don’t lack items to lust after. I rarely, actually never, encounter poor quality in design or fabric, and don’t spend more than I want to spend. If anything, the number of places where I can expect to find perfection are increasing exponentially.

It’s only pandemic stagnation that’s putting me off right now!

Salamander76 · 29/12/2021 00:44

Totally agrees with @YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators (but also agree the sales seem crap this year - I had a cursory glance and was quite relieved not to see anything that tempted me!)

allfurcoatnoknickers · 29/12/2021 03:33

I was thinking the exact same thing today. I don't want anything for me in the sales Sad. I've bought some home bits and pieces and clothes for DS, who's having a monster growth spurt, but that's it.

Aderyn21 · 29/12/2021 03:44

Same here. Bought a new skirt to wear for my birthday dinner out, but everything feels so joyless and as if we're waiting for the other boot to drop, so shopping for new clothes seems so pointless. I can't be bothered and normally I love this period between Christmas and New year, when dh and I are both home and can have leisurely mooches around the shops

BangingOn · 29/12/2021 08:10

I’m with you. I have a few worn out things I need to replace and some gaps in my wardrobe from losing weight so was excited for the sales but I am struggling to find much this year. Not sure whether it’s what’s on offer in the sales or my frame of mind.

Tableto · 29/12/2021 08:17

I've bought a new set of make up and my skincare stuff, mine tends to last around about a year and even with sales throughout the year usually seems cheaper at this time of year- other than that haven't seen anything. I think part of it is that most places have sales throughout the year now, it's not the big event it once was. Think of the money you're saving though, and must mean you have most of what you want already :)

Divebar2021 · 29/12/2021 08:20

Speaking for myself I’m trying to stop over consumption. I don’t want to be continually wanting more stuff… where does that take you?

LiterallyKnowsBest · 29/12/2021 08:47

Xmas Grin I could never be accused of over-consumption. I’m not acquisitive by nature and I like a very limited number of things in my wardrobe. My dressing starts to look chaotic (rather than stylishly eccentric) if I have too many clothes.

But I do miss the excitement of setting out for a fun (aka challenging) day in a new item that gives me a completely new impression of myself.

PersonaNonGarter · 29/12/2021 17:17

It’s not about consumption in my mind. It’s about feeling inspired and excited by fashion - and I’m not. Which is depressing me.

I agree with pps re not having anywhere to go and things getting cancelled. I guess a big part of the excitement of clothes is having somewhere to wear them to. But I seem to be struggling to get excited about clothes in general.

Beebumble2 · 29/12/2021 18:46

Totally agree. The only thing I’ve bought on line are a pair of half price Chelsea boots, for next year, as my old faithfuls are probably on their way out.

Share some ideas with us?! Point us in the direction of these great quality items and purveyors of perfection?!

I'm desperate to drop some sales cash but can't find a thing to buy!

MintJulia · 29/12/2021 19:00

You aren't the only one OP. I spent several hours on-line yesterday and was left completely flat. Drab, dreary stuff. Nothing interesting at all. And I actually wanted to treat myself.

I ordered a bath panel Grin Grin

Daisy829 · 29/12/2021 19:02

I’m the same. I did pick up a couple of jumpers in a local store today & I’ve ordered some Estée Lauder skincare whilst it’s on offer which makes it much better value but I always like to browse some of the high end handbags & usually purchase something but nothing is standing out to me. I think I’ve got enough stuff to be honest. Not a bad place to be.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 29/12/2021 19:03

I love all my winter outfits so am going to miss the sales and then buy some new Spring outfits.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 29/12/2021 19:18

I bought six items full price from Next and Marks and Spencer late November and enjoyed mixing and matching them for different Christmas activities and events. I prefer to pay full price and get exactly what I want when I want it.

Riverlee · 29/12/2021 19:24

“ I agree with pps re not having anywhere to go and things getting cancelled. I guess a big part of the excitement of clothes is having somewhere to wear them to.”

Was about to say something similar.

Riverlee · 29/12/2021 19:25

Although have just ordered some walking trousers for myself, hardly the height of fashion though.

LookdeepintotheParka · 29/12/2021 19:39

I've ordered stuff for me and DH online from Rapanui as they have a rare clearance sale. Other than that the sales and deals seem woeful this year!

I was out with DD today trying to buy school shoes (and failing) and it was incredibly quiet! I don't think people feel it's worth risking a visit into town for lackluster sales.
