Are parkas out of fashion?

I was thinking about buying a dark green parka with a furry hood. The parka goes a bit lower than hip length. But, do you think parkas are out of style? or look a bit tacky?

Depends on the style. If you go for one with detachable fur it will probably last longer. They tend to look scruffy when the fur has been washed.

Which ones are you looking at?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/12/2021 22:26

I love a parka , for me olive green with a fishtail hem and no fur .

Christmasisallaround · 24/12/2021 22:39

Parka's aren't tacky and are a classic style surely? I love them. Definitely olive/khaki green.

That one is OK. I checked and the furry bit is detachable.

Not sure if it was a parka because the hood was detachable but I gave a close relative a hooded coat for Christmas, so I hope it's a classic

I wish parkas came in tall length. I’m only 5ft 8, but if l pull the draw cord at the waist it gathers up under my boobs.

This is why l never buy them. I’m very long waisted.

I'm going against popular opinion but I don't think they're stylish at all. But obviously it's what you think op that matters.

KirstenBlest · 26/12/2021 17:31

Some can look stylish but generally they are practical

Laiste · 26/12/2021 17:44

@KirstenBlest

Agreed.

Some practical items of clothing go through a phase of being on trend for certain age groups at certain times and it's nice when this aligns for you.

Sometimes have to just make the decision though - if it's super comfy, warm or flattering on you - how much does 'fashion' matter?

Findingthelight1 · 26/12/2021 17:47

They're not at all stylish, but they're warm and practical.
There was a moment around 10 years ago when parkas were "trendy" again for about five minutes, but since then I think they've firmly gone back into dog-walking territory. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

itsgettingweird · 26/12/2021 17:47

I have one for nice wear.

Well not nice as such but not for work (school!) or taking ds swimming.

I've had it years and every year people say how lovely it is. It still looks brand new so I think they don't realise it's the same one I've had for 5 years!

MrsTophamHat · 26/12/2021 17:49

To keep the fur on the hood nice you can brush and blow dry it. Only takes a few minutes, no skill required and it stops the fur getting all matted and horrible. I've had one last years and years by doing that.

KirstenBlest · 26/12/2021 17:59

@Laiste, fashion and style aren't the same thing.

I don't have a parka but I have a hooded coat for keeping dry and warm in the winter. Not stylish although it previously belonged to a stylish friend who was decluttering but very practical with lots of pockets

freshcarnation · 26/12/2021 18:01

I've got a Superdry one. It's well made and very warm. As an old mod, I wish I'd kept my American army surplus one with The Who patches on it, but my mum chucked it out.

FanGirlX · 26/12/2021 18:49

I'd like a new parka - planning on buying one in the sales.

katcatkat · 26/12/2021 18:56

@47ArseInTheCoOpWindow new look do a tall version of there green parka i just bought it for my daughter www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/coats-jackets/tall-khaki-faux-fur-hooded-drawstring-parka-jacket/p/800748534

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/12/2021 19:15

Have they moved the waist though?! Tall ime just means they add 2” on the cuffs and length!

LightOfAThousandStars · 26/12/2021 19:23

I'm looking for one in the sales too. Have been considering this New Look one. I already have a padded coat and think parkas still look stylish for casual wear with jeans etc. A proper outdoors brand one may not be as fashionable though. The Superdry one linked above is a great colour.

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 13:23

That one is nice but the drawstring waist is a bit high

LightOfAThousandStars · 27/12/2021 13:38

Yeah that's true, it's not easy finding the perfect one 😬

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 14:27

Uniqlo usually has nice hooded coats

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 14:28

Me too.

Try Helly Hasen for a Parka, they do good sales. Maybe because it a sailing brand / Norwegian, mine fits my height (175cm) and size (broad shoulders) really well. I've had it two years and the cream fur inside still looks perfect.
