I tried this on today and I loved it; it really suited me (even if I do say so myself Blush)

But....
the V neck is much too low.

I've started hunting online for something similar (not plain black) and if anyone fancies joining in, that would be fab. Grin

TIA

If the only thing you don’t like is the deep V could you not wear something under it? Lace modesty panel or whatever they are called… although that does sound like something Queen Victoria might have encouraged! Horrible name aside it might make that dress more wearable for you.

On a neckline like that it could easily be sewn up an inch or two. It’s such a shame when dresses are spoilt with plunging necklines, as if everyone wants to show cleavage!

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 10/12/2021 09:45

Thank you for your replies. I did think about trying to stitch the V to make it a bit higher but I’m no good with a needle and thread Blush
I’ll I tried it on with a black satin camisole underneath but it didn’t look right.

Oh apologies, I misread your original post and thought you wanted plain black but it says not plain black - back to the drawing board!

Jacaranda75 · 10/12/2021 10:27

That would be easy to sew! I'd offer to do it for you if you lived near me. Do you know anyone who can sew?

Phase Eight have some lovely ones:

Depends what colour you want.

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 10/12/2021 13:27

Thanks for all the posts. I’ve asked local friends for a recommendation for someone to alter the original dress. Fingers crossed.

Hush have a few different dresses like that . This is one but there are others.

thank you albird. I've now ordered three from Hush to try and I've still go the Ted Baker one which I'm going to try on again tonight with a different bra and see if it makes a difference.

Alternations lady isn't keen to stitch together the sides to make the V higher as she is concerned that the front of the dress won't lay nicely. Her suggestion is to put a piece of black fabric to cover the bottom of the gap that I don't like but I think that will make the dress look quite different.

I might just wear trousers and a top instead Grin

Similar styles but different colours at Hush. They have a few in those loose, v neck design.
I find most v necks are too deep for me, i have a shortish torso, so i just alter them slightly with a few stitches if possible or wear a cami underneath.

Please could you help me find a dress like this?

Some alterations sit well. Some don't. I had some success last summer via putting a tuck in the side neck at either side (at shoulder), which slightly pulled the neckline upwards to match my frame. Imagine pinching the dress with your fingers at the inner shoulder to 'lift it' a bit, to where the v-neckline will suit you. I placed a tuck there.

It won't work if there is a fitted, shaped boob/bodice, but on these types of loose dresses it has saved me a lot of hassle!

thank you beatrixpotterspencil; it sounds like you are rather more of a dab hand with a needle than I am Smile

There are more in the designers section, but some are more than twice the price. You can get 40% off offers and codes depending on when you need to purchase.

You have all been so helpful in my quest so here is the update Grin

I've ordered the same Ted Baker dress in a smaller size to see if that solves the issue (I'm collecting it on Monday)

I've got 5 other dresses (as highlighted here) either ordered or on hold in stores which I will get by midweek.

A decision will be made by Friday.

No more suggestions please as I really don't like clothes shopping and I have put more effort into this dress search than ever before and I'm over it now. Blush

Fingers crossed the eventual dress doesn't get the Covid curse!!!
