how do you get that sort of 50s type blow dried fringe?

I mean like Marylin Monroe, sort of a sideways S shape...I should probably find a photo...
My post chemo hair is quite curly and steel grey, could do with a bit more of a "styled" look...

If I'm imagining it correctly I'd say it might be pinned in place then dried before removing the pins. And lots of hairspray is involved I'd guess.
