Quick help - shall I buy the spotty velvet Boden dress

here
I am size 12/14 hourglass, big norks, red hair.
I have a wedding to go to in Jan - afternoon ceremony evening reception.
Shall I buy the spotty dress or
a) Do I need something more cocktaily?
b) Will half the other guests recognise it/ be wearing it?
c) Is it just a bit like something my 7year old DD might wear?
d) If I do get it do I go for the 14 which might be too big or the 12 which might be too small?
Please help me make this decision
Confused of Mumsnet

A Think dress will be fine for ceremony - may want to add dressy shawl etc
B yes and no
c yes
d order both and send one back

Does that help?

HonoriaGlossop · 14/12/2007 13:11

A) No I think it's lovely
B) Depends on the demographics of your wedding group, I guess; are you posher than them or are they posher than you can't answer that without more FACTS my dear
C) I don't think it's too girlish and anyway if you have big norks you will fill it out enough to banish any of that
D) Agree, you need to order both as Boden sizes can be ODD

Good choice I like it

ChippolataMinton · 14/12/2007 14:01

i've seen it in the shop and it looks lovely, glossy rather than matt velvet IYSWIM

Raffaella · 14/12/2007 14:08

I ordered this a few weeks ago. I'm a size 12, not big norks. Had to send it back as 12 was too over the chest. Couldn't believe it. Size 14 was just too big generally. V disappointing fit but quite a nice dress.

Raffaella · 14/12/2007 14:09

too tight over the chest.

MerryPIFFLEmas · 14/12/2007 14:09

how big in the norkage rosa?

HonoriaGlossop · 14/12/2007 14:10

Yes they really are odd in their sizing, aren't they. It's depressing to have to buy a 16 when I get 14's elsewhere! Also ordered what I thought was a nice skirt from there but it was the most unflattering item I've EVER seen, not quite an A line shape and I can't imagine who it would actually have looked nice on

But some of the designs are so nice......

RosaLuxMundi · 14/12/2007 15:26

OK I have ordered a 12 as they didn't have a 14 in Blackberry, but now it looks like it will be too tight norkwise (I am 34DD) so should I go back and order 14 in Laurel before they are all gone and just send back the one that doesn't fit or should I wait and see or what?
Oh god, this wedding thing is stressing me out and I have three DDs to dress for it as well

rosa I am a 32 H and even a 16 is tight o the norks
have bought a 16 before when norks were 32F and had 16 taken in by seamstress.

MerryPIFFLEmas · 15/12/2007 21:34

reckon the 14 might fit you though

Sidge · 15/12/2007 21:37

It's just not very weddingy is it?

I would go for something a bit more, well, dressy.

controlfreakyhohohohohohoho · 15/12/2007 21:37

was going to say my friend has this and it's a bit, well "droopy" in that way that synthetic velvet so often is. it's quite "fun" but not v smart. so no great loss if it doesnt fit imo. i should have a plan b if i were you

HairyIrene · 15/12/2007 21:42

either colour will suit, but blackberry is fav.. and your red hair will set it off!
cant help with sizes mess me own up!

pukkapatch · 15/12/2007 21:46

i got a fabulous black velvet dress in the last boden sale, and for some stupid farking reason, i sent it back!
why why why?
it was fabulous. i dont know why sent it back. havent seen anythign as fabulous anywhere else.
even the spotty one isnt as nice ats that one was. that would have been perfect for jan wedding.

hoxtonchick · 15/12/2007 21:48

i do like it, but think it would look sweet on my 2 year old dd.... not quite weddingy enough.

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 15/12/2007 21:59

what do you like most about it - the shape? the spots? the fabric?

then maybe we could find alternatives, becasue it does look a little droopy and also sounds as though it may well not fit

Monsoon has spotty things
Hobbs had GORGEOUS spotty things a few months back but not any more unfortunately

controlfreakyhohohohohohoho · 15/12/2007 22:05

yup. sound advice.
is it the spots or the velvet that is the defining attraction for you?

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 15/12/2007 22:06

hmm
think the monsoon things are small patterns rather than spots. need to put my glasses on

controlfreakyhohohohohohoho · 15/12/2007 22:06
