Urgently need hair dyes that lift and colour. Have cocked up hair :(

I wanted to have multicoloured hair and have totally cocked it up I think. My hair is v dark brown nearly black. I used l'oreal majilis with the oxydent and it made some of my hair a nice dark red but I wanted it redder so I bleached half of it (the underneath, then ran out of bleach) but it has not made it light enough; it is now kind of yellow? I can't imagine any colours taking to it. I am SURE you can get box dyes for red / purple with "2 levels of lift" but i can't find them anywhere... Please help...

THANKS
The reason I have DIYed it is because 2 hairdressers said they wouldn't do it, one would only do darker highlights and one said they would but it would be £400 which I can in no way afford PLUS they wanted to do Olaplex on it first for another load of £££. I can't travel and my town is a bit small.

Show us how yellow it is. I've dyed over some pretty awful yellow/orange shades after bleaching. Warm colours like pink and red should be fine.

Idiotblue · 14/11/2021 23:03

Please see pic... you can see the very dark brown is my natural hair colour. In real life it is even more yellowy orange. It is horrible and dry as well ☹ I feel like a right muppet!

Your natural hair colour is beautiful. Can you try and dye it dark again?

70sduvet · 15/11/2021 12:07

You could probably get away with using a direct deposit dye (vegetable dye) such as directions on it. If you are wanting to go red.
You can get it cheaply on ebay or amazon Or if you have a hippy type shop in your town.
It does stain everything when applying so use gloves and old towels etc.
I'd be v careful/ie don't use more bleach or lifting dyes if your hair already feels crap as it could break off.
Are you wanting a half and half head..like bright red underneath and the top half of your head you are happy with?
If so then the bleached bit looks OK to me to take a directions/crazy colour/adore type dye
As long as its even
If not you could try and rebleach ONLY the dark spots...YouTube is your friend here

I was a youthful idiot and dyed over way oranger colours than that with all sorts of dyes. Not a colour that didn’t take and my hair never fell out! Don’t panic.

RedCarsGoFaster · 15/11/2021 12:24

Looks like it's pretty badly damaged. Unfortunately, this is why no hairdresser would be do what you asked.

I've thrown dark brown box dyes over bodged bleach jobs on my own hair many a time over the years....

What colour do you actually want to add to this now? Most reds are advertised as being without bleach these days.

Stick a hat on and go have a good look in a Boots or wherever.

Benchbenchbench · 15/11/2021 14:38

There is a risk, going from bleached to brown that you end up with a green tinge. Look up ‘filling’ your hair, which is what you will probably need to do (I’m not a hairdresser though).

I'd get Adore from Amazon, it comes in loads of reds/purples. One if the dark ones would take, your roots might be a bit darker but will look ok. Its a deposit only colour so no bleach/lift.

RacheyCat · 15/11/2021 22:26

Yeah, you can put a red or even a pink over that no bother. You don't need to lift any further.

Bobsyer · 15/11/2021 23:00

Reds will be fine over that. Directions semi perm colours are good.

Idiotblue · 16/11/2021 20:41

Thanks everyone. It is so damaged it is unreal SadBlush I was hoping to do purples and reds and sort of wanted them to blend into each other. So was going to bleach the rest of my hair too! I don't think I will be doing that now. That is good news if red will take to the orange/ yellow straw-like part. I might just leave the rest alone!

Has anyone used Olaplex to undo the damage caused by bleaching it? Is it worth the money?

I have half and half hair......dark brown bleached up to yellow and I chuck on crazy colour bordeaux. Takes a charm and is bright, bright pink!

hartof · 16/11/2021 20:54

If you don't have the money for hair masks you can use coconut oil and sleep in it. I did that for a while after a very bad bleach job.

Do you think it'll go bright pink on my hair (the lightened part) or is it still too dark / "brassy"?
