Glam Rock Night - What the Heck to Wear?

Florence1960 · 12/11/2021 19:48

Got a glam rock night in just a couple of weeks. Really, I remember glam rock being all about the men and I've no idea what to wear.
Any ideas, please?

Maybe a Mini skirt or shiny trousers? Glitter, sequins , go mad! Maybe a band t shirt? Jeans?

Mantlemoose · 13/11/2021 14:15

Long Curly frizzy wig, sparkly leggings, platforms and leopard skin top

Deathraystare · 13/11/2021 14:16

Oh and of course go mad on the make up - whether you are male or female!

DooDahDah · 13/11/2021 14:19

I think shiny, tight leggings, platform shoes/boots etc pretty much the same as the blokes!

Glitter make up, backcombed wild hair and you're good to go!

StuntNun · 13/11/2021 14:19

Band t-shirt (e.g. Poison, Mötley Crüe, Whitesnake, Alice Cooper,) blue denim jeans, blue denim jacket for double denim effect, pointy black boots with a heel. Bonus points for lots of band patches on your jacket or one big one in the centre of the back. This was practically my uniform for the early 90s!

Florence1960 · 14/11/2021 12:19

I just can't really remember what girls wore, other than the ABBA girls and Suzi Quatro! It was all about the men, wasn't it? I binned my sequinned leggings 😢 but I have got some shiny trousers and satin tops. Loads of glitter too!
Thank you xx

Something like "Kiss" ?
70s GlamRock and easy enough to copy their make-up.
Black mini, boots , fisnets , something silver as the top ?

David Bowie ?

@Florence1960
I,saw these the other day and instantly thought ‘Dave Hill” might be a budget stretch for one night though 😂

An absolute steal at £300

Not Abba Grin

If you have long hair then curly or crimped, if you have short hair a colourful scarf worn as a bandana (Axl Rose style) or headband (BonJovi style). Lots of jewellery, bangles, rings, hoop earrings, black eyeliner.
Skinny jeans or leggings, mini skirt and leggings, cowboy boots or ankle boots or over the knee boots even better,
Silky blouse, waistcoat, colourful. anything with fringing is good also.
Have fun!

I've just looked at some videos of The Sweet /Sweet to see if there was anything remotely wearable .
My DH did not know that Brian Connolly (lead vocal) was the half brother of Mark McMannus ( Taggart)
I'm sure I told him ages ago , he just doesn''t listen

I saw those and instantly thought A&E ....Wink

The way I read it, Mark McManus and Sweet singer Brian Connolly were cousins, but a different Brian Connolly was Mark McManus' brother.

That’s not 70s glam rock

Cut yourself an extreme fringe a la Dave from Slade

Some of the previous suggestions are too early, hippy, or too late, heavy rock. Though the bands wore outfits like my suggestion the only item that seemed to crossover into the general population was the platform footwear. Unfortunately I'm old enough to be envious of girls wearing enormous platforms.

MrsVeryTired · 14/11/2021 17:41

@thickthighs73 OP didn't specify 70's Glam Rock and I think @StuntNun went the same direction I did (late 80's/early 90's)

After I posted I thought about 70's glam rock Marc Bolan/T-Rex etc and realised I'd maybe gone the wrong direction
Nvmind think OP has got lots of ideas anyway, have fun OP

mewkins · 14/11/2021 17:55

Yeah I would go Slade rather than hair metal or rock. Mullet wig, shiny flares and platforms.

ScribblingPixie · 14/11/2021 17:56

The Biba look is how I remember girls doing glam rock in the early 70s. Satin, velvet, headscarves, boas, lots of jewellery, all very slinky. Like the men but with a sort of 1920s style too.

Floisme · 14/11/2021 18:07

From what I can remember, the big point of glam rock was gender non conformity and yeah it was mostly about men because women wearing high heels and make up and glittery trousers just didn't have the same shock value. Maybe some Patti Labelle e.g. Lady Marmalade? Otherwise I agree with pps that the nearest equivalents were probably the Suzi Quattros and the Joan Jetta. Me, I'd go as Marc Bolan.
