Help with a dress for a Bond themed casino night??

RiderGirl · 09/11/2021 22:00

Don't even know where to begin, I usually spend all my time in wellies wearing a muddy coat with hay in my hair!

Works Xmas do at posh hotel, I think everyone is going all out.

I'm mid 30's, and definitely want to look super classy, but don't have a huge budget! I'm 5ft6 and size 8 ish but haven't got an arse that would look good in anything too tight. All the dresses I've looked at so far just look like bridesmaids dresses. Can anyone point me in the right direction pretty please??

Black sheath dress with black evening gloves and a cigarette holder would be simple. Big sunglasses. Large fake diamonds or pearls maybe?

That's what i would go for .. not super-exciting but it would do the job.

Maybe go either/or on the sunglasses and evening gloves. Both could be overkill Grin

What about something like this? Bond girls seem to favour low back or front and often slinky material? Not fancy dress looking either.

Some of these could be fabulous

Phase eight has some more forgiving options

Takingabreakagain · 09/11/2021 23:04

Have you tried eBay? Especially this time of year you can find loads of dresses for fancy dos. DH has a big do each year and I get a new to me from there and resell. People just wear them for one night. A search for prom dress usually comes up with something or try Coast or Phase Eight

TuftyRusty · 10/11/2021 07:20

I’m not sure I’d go for Phase Eight or Coast. To me they’re wedding/formal dresses and a little safe/boring to fit the theme - I can’t see a Bond girl in a Phase Eight number.

I would look at renting a dress - e.g from Hurr. If you’re only wearing it once it makes sense plus you can then wear an amazing dress for less than an average dress would cost. They’ve got loads of glamorous dresses.

eBay or other second hand would also be worth a shout, but I’d look for Realisation Par and Reformation and similar brands and see what you can find. Outnet is also worth a shout.

RiderGirl · 10/11/2021 07:50

Thanks everyone - yes I was thinking coast/phase eight a bit too weddingy really, I will look into renting a dress I didn't even realise this was something you could do!

Does it have to be a dress? What about something more like a tuxedo?

Yayaga · 10/11/2021 08:50

If you cant be bothered with a dress go for white suit with nothing under the jacket, red lips, slicked back ponytail or big 60s hair and very high heels

I'd go as Bond. Much easier.

RiderGirl · 10/11/2021 10:09

I like that @valerianroot

Those reformation dresses are gorgeous, but a bit pricey given the OP says not a huge budget. The asos one is lovely!

OP, I would suggest a trip to your local TK Maxx, which usually have a selection of fairly glam dresses at a decent price.

Yellow85 · 10/11/2021 10:20

I don’t think you have to spend a fortune so here’s a few budget options:

A couple of options from Oxfam (a tour of your local charity shops might also be a good idea):

I love Isolated Heroes dresses - their sequin ones are gorgeous. www.isolated-heroes.com/collections/party-wear

AmandaHoldensLips · 10/11/2021 10:35

My local charity shops are stuffed with full-length dresses now that it's coming up to Christmas. Some of them are pretty amazing!

RiderGirl · 18/11/2021 21:49

Thanks all, some of those are lovely but I can't really do a bodycon shape or too tight on the hips because I'm a bit saddlebaggy (sp?) Was thinking about maybe a posh long skirt and spangly top? I've got a bit of a mismatch really between my top and bottom halves where if a dress fits on top it's usually too tight on the bottom 😭

I feel your pain. I had to go to one which was organised by a 30 year old bloke who had a 19 year girlfriend. Obviously James Bond is easy for the blokes, less so for the ladies over a certain age/weight. Quite a sexist theme for a works do.

rifling · 21/11/2021 12:29

I'd take a toy cat and go as Blofeld.

Spanx, slim fitting black dress, heels and you will be sorted.
PermanentTemporary · 21/11/2021 12:38

If you google Pussy Galore there are some good ideas - a crossover top and jodhpurs with riding boots? All about the hair in her case. Also go very 60s on the eyes, false eyelashes and lots of eyeliner.

crumpet · 21/11/2021 12:41

Can you not just go as Bond?
