Hair products for sticking up child's hair

My son has thick hair that sticks up and out when it is dry. He wanted to grow it but it just goes out. So we had a haircut to a short style and it's still going up at the back. Unfortunately it doesn't look great.

What products can I use that won't leave a gel look or sticky/ hard layer but will help it look better?

It's such a beautiful blonde colour and I love the thickness but it's wild!

Would washing and blow drying it in the morning help? So he’s not going out with “bed head”. I had to do this when my own hair was short or it would stick up everywhere

Actually yes DS also now washes it in the morning and blow dries it. I wondered why. Now I know it's to tame it.

He'll need to sometimes wash his hair twice to wash out the wax then again to wash his hair to prevent product build up and hair them getting heavy
