Is anyone else finding Boden hugely overpriced and largely unwearable now?

Until recently, I loved Boden clothes and bought so much from them. I know they aren’t for everyone but the plainer, more classic styles did the job at work and often at home. Advice found some unusual, beautifully designed gems too. But, oh my gosh, there is not one of the voluminous, frilly floral dresses or randomly captioned, nylon-heavy knits that I can bring myself to consider. I did get a couple of frocks delivered, but at £120 with flimsy unlined fabric I would get batter value from wearing my living room curtains. When I think of some of the gorgeous, quality clothes I bought from there ten years ago (Andy still wear), it’s really unfortunate. Luckily, I’ve discovered the clearance section on the Hobbs site so there’s life in my ‘staid with style’ look yet.

Anyone else given up on Boden, or maybe I’m just getting boring in my old age?

I got put off by the constant DFS style sales.

Just charge a sensible price in the first place!

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 26/10/2021 09:02

@AnnieSnap you look gorgeous!

I have to buy from Boden because it is one of the very few companies that have a decent petite selection, but I am utterly sick of the lack of price/quality correlation and the ridiculous colours and loud prints/patterns. I also think their tween & teen range is utterly out of touch with reality.

AddictedToLuv · 26/10/2021 09:17

I never buy anything from Boden unless I have a 20% off voucher. Same for The White Company.

In fact, I rarely pay full price for anything. If you spend a few mins on the internet you can usually find a code or go onto a website and they often ask for an email then e.g. 10% off.

ExConstance · 26/10/2021 09:27

I really want to find something in each catalogue that I like, but I just don't. The swimwear is nice but I don't need any of that at the moment.
I'm more drawn to Hush and Whistles these days, with a little splurge in Brora each sale.

BrilloPaddy · 26/10/2021 09:29

I quite like their clothes but they're not cut for the plus sizes. I'm somewhere between an 18 and 20 but even the 22 never fits my hips and the jersey dresses I bought for the summer make me look like a dumpling. We're not a good match..... I've bought loads this winter from White Stuff and their clothes are perfect on me.

ZenNudist · 26/10/2021 09:35

Just very frumpy. If its not a "scratch out your eyes" pattern it's the cut. Too many sales. Silly prices.

They follow their own fashion in colours which makes it hard to integrate with other clothing.

wolfstarling · 26/10/2021 09:41

I bought 2 jumpers recently, mistakenly though they were wool as they were expensive. They look like a couple of old rags after a handful of wears. It has put me right off them tbh. Infact after only the first wear they looked old!

Composition: 32% Viscose
23% Polymide
20% Cotton
.....4% Cashmere

Confused
Hathertonhariden · 26/10/2021 09:51

I bought a couple if things from them after seeing so many rave about Boden. Sent it all back as I was going to pay those prices for supermarket quality clothes. TBH in a blind test of fabric quality Sainsburys TU collection would come out on top.

Hathertonhariden · 26/10/2021 09:51

Wasn't going to pay obviously

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/10/2021 09:55

I used to buy a lot of Boden but now, hardly ever. I like their cropped cardigans a d Richmond trousers but the dresses are now dreadful. Such a pity as they were great workwear. As others have said, the fabric quality has plummeted and the designs are really ugly,
I really can't see it lasting much longer unless they completely reinvent themselves. I'm in my 50s, but some of the designs feel very old-fashioned to me

Hopeisallineed · 26/10/2021 09:55

I don’t understand how people can pay those prices! Unless you are very well off. They seem ridiculously expensive these days.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 26/10/2021 10:03

I still buy a fair amount from Boden, but never at full price. I like their hoodies, jumpsuits and coats, but I agree that the quality of the cotton seems to have gone down recently. Also gems. I have had to re-hem the last three things I have bought. I also buy the children's t-shirts but again, they are not as robust as they used to be.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 26/10/2021 10:04

That should be "hems" not gems. I am also slightly worried that my autocorrect picks gem before hem!

UnbeatenMum · 26/10/2021 10:07

I used to buy their dresses and tops but I don't find they wear that well, no better than a cheaper high street shop. I bought a plain navy t- shirt in the Summer and it had a hole in after about 3 wears.

WeDidntMeanToGoToSea · 26/10/2021 10:12

I too used to buy a lot from there (sale only), but have given up - think I last ordered from them in 2019. The quality no longer justifies the price IMO, not even on sale.

I have a couple of nice dresses from them and a lovely red cord coat (must dig it out for the winter) I bought in 2008 and still love. Did the school run today in a fleece-lined mac from about 2011 which is getting pretty battered now but which I can't bear to chuck. But most of my later buys (petite stretch trousers and a couple of flowing tops excepted) have been disappointing.

freelions · 26/10/2021 10:20

I have bought hardly anything from Biden in the past 5 years and the catalogues go straight in recycling now

I don't object to some of thd styles but it is so hugely overpriced and the quality has dropped

Swimwear separates are about the only Boden item I would consider now and possibly shoes too but only when heavily discounted

LetHimHaveIt · 26/10/2021 10:35

@AnnieSnap You are absolutely wearing the shit out of that coat. But you're a good-looking woman with a nice figure. I struggle to imagine how I'd look 😂

Sooverthemill · 26/10/2021 10:37

Swimwear and t shirts and petite stuff sometimes. I've bought some boots this year which were good ( with 20% discount). I used to get most of my clothes from Boden as I can only shop online and they are very good for that as sizes are consistent. But this year I've sent back dresses, knitwear and a coat. DH still has their shirts and T-shirt's though

silentpool · 26/10/2021 10:39

I went off Boden when the Breton tops I bought were like rags after 3 months. I complained and they did give me credit, which I spent on pajamas which have held up much better.

weebarra · 26/10/2021 10:44

I buy very little from there now, at least for me. The DSs still like the joggers and DD the swimwear.
I used to buy a lot, as I'm wee and fat and it was good for basics. Not now.

OompaLumpaLabrador · 26/10/2021 11:31

As an aside, DH still buys shirts and knitwear from Boden. Both still use good fabrics and natural fibres. Obviously, Boden consider their male clientele more discerning 🙄

Benjispruce4 · 26/10/2021 11:33

I’ve got a couple of Boden dresses from a few years ago. Great quality jersey. I then bought a couple of 3/4 sleeve T shirts and they were thinner than Primark. Won’t buy more.

TollgateDebs · 26/10/2021 11:38

Yes to price increases, some things do attract and especially the colour and prints on their clothing but latest buys have disappointed. Older Boden items in my wardrobe really are of a different class. Even the Sales are not the same.

didireallysaythat · 26/10/2021 11:39

I buy used boden wool coats etc on eBay - can't justify the cost brand new but coats seem to be the one thing they don't dick about with and ruin.

Westerman · 26/10/2021 11:43

I'm finding Boden a lot more hit & miss recently. I hardly ever used to return anything I ordered but now send back quite a lot.

I ordered a shirt recently and the fabric was so thin, my mother would have said you could spit through it! Even my trusty nude bras showed through it and I hate that.
