What is your waist measurement (relative to the rest of you)?

Slightly random question, but I'm finding that if I buy trousers big enough to be comfortable on the waist, the rest is too big.

I've put on a bit of weight with menopause, but really not that much (I weigh 7st 12 / 5'2" tall), waist measurement varies between 28" - 29" depending on water retention I guess. TBH that's not changed a great deal despite having gained around 1/2 a stone. Trousers that fit comfortably on the waist are mostly massive on my hips/arse. (Strangely leg length is less of an issue, I sometimes have to shorten, but not as much as you'd expect given my height.)

Am I just condemned to a life of M&S et al ? (I can't bear elasticated waists, they give me horrible backache.)

My waist is the same as yours. I'm 5'10 and 11.5 stone. Most regular leg trousers are too long for me.

Basically, humans are too different for mass produced clothes to ever really fit properly!

Neurodiversitydoctor · 23/10/2021 12:40

5'5" 9st 5 (ish) 26-27in waist

Neurodiversitydoctor · 23/10/2021 12:44

High street 8-10 seem to fit ok

minipie · 23/10/2021 12:45

You sound like a very slim apple shape.

I’m the opposite - similar height to you and weigh about 10 lb more but my waist is 26-27.

If you haven’t always been this shape and the apple shape/proportionately large waist measurement is new, or if it seems to be bloating, then it’s worth seeing your doctor.

bizboz · 23/10/2021 12:46

I am similar to you. 28-29" waist, 5'7 tall, weigh 9 stone. I am thin everywhere except my waist - I'm pretty much straight up and down. I have the same difficulty with trousers as if they fit around my waist they are baggy everywhere else. Leggings are better but I often just wear dresses now (without fitted waist).

Sadik · 23/10/2021 12:48

OK, I guess I do have a large waist relative to everything else! I'd say I've always been this shape, straight up and down, but have tended to be underweight (down to 7 stone in the past) so I think I'm only noticing it on clothes because I've gained a bit more, and also I guess because high-waist trousers are in fashion.

I'm just the same. I'm 5"5.5, about 8.5 stone and my waist is 28-29 inches and has been always. My rib cage just seems big! Like- my ribs would prevent me ever having a tiny waist.

Straight up and down.

Sadik · 23/10/2021 12:53

YY to the big rib cage. When I'm undressed I do actually have a very visible waist, but I think that's relative to my ribs. I've got broad shoulders too but those are less problematic on the clothes front! Basically I need to wear sleeveless tees and low waist combats then I look great. Shame what I wanted was a pair of high waist cords Grin

At my thinnest I was boobs 34 waist 29 and hips 37. I was slim so it was just my natural body shape not fat.
I gained over two stone over NHS healthy and my waist boomed to 36 inches. The NHS website says of your waist is over 31 you are high risk for heart disease etc. I'm now (just) in the NHS healthy I but am still over the magic 31. I guess it is a rough indicator and worth bearing in mind but I wouldn't put too much stock in it if you are a healthy weight.

Waves to my fellow larger waisters. It's hard when big bum, tiny waist is in vogue. We were born in the wrong time as we would have done well I'm the roaring twenties!

workshy44 · 23/10/2021 13:02

24" waist, 5,7 about 8 stone 3
Even when I weigh more my waist is always tiny, my mother is exactly the same. Even after having large babies. I think my v v fast walking helps too though

BelleOfTheProvince · 23/10/2021 13:03

Hips 34 I think, not 37.
Straight line basically.

Impossiblecauses · 23/10/2021 13:19

30 inch waist, 42 inch hips Confused. Trousers are a nightmare to find.

ILookAtTheFloor · 23/10/2021 13:20

Here's some pics of me to demonstrate my shape, 28-29 inch waist.... Apologies for the mess in the back!

MrsVeryTired · 23/10/2021 13:33

@ILookAtTheFloor you are tiny! Your waist is not big for you as you are taller than OP. I'd be similar if I was slim, I don't have a superslim waist in proportion to the rest, not an hourglass and never will be.

OP different fit of trousers is what you need, boyfriend are good for straighter shapes. NO to M&S forever Grin
Yes to the combats, I'm overweight but look pretty good in combats or boyfriends, awful in "Mom" jeans

MrsVeryTired · 23/10/2021 13:36

High fives @BelleOfTheProvince yep, its just fashion and the fashion atm is to show off your tiny waist and wear baggy jeans, I want to show off my slim legs!

These are the lovely trousers I want to wear that won't fit me or suit me!

Very similar to me @Sadik! I've found my people Grin

BelleOfTheProvince · 23/10/2021 14:12

Also just like to air my grievance at the song "My Humps" being so popular in my clubbing days, alongside songs which dictated that I "shake my booty".

When will songs celebrating the ironing board figure be in vogue? It's been over twenty years of waiting 😅

Chakraleaf · 23/10/2021 14:16

Jeez, I am 5ft 2, 9st 5 and my waist is about 31'. No boots , small legs just a big stomach!

minipie · 23/10/2021 14:24

For years fashion has been all about straight up and down… as someone who has always struggled to find trousers due to big thighs/small waist, I should obviously rush out and buy everything right now!

HippeePrincess · 23/10/2021 14:26

I’m not sure at the moment but there’s always a 13 inch difference between my waist and hip measurement regardless of how heavy I am and trousers are always too big on the waist if they fit my hips and bum.

BelleOfTheProvince · 23/10/2021 14:38

Has it? Ever since I have been of a fashion conscious age the ideals and figures on trend have been: Late nineties: small hips, huge boobs Noughties: curvy with waist Now: Insane small waist and big bum and boobs, but skinny (probably only achieved online using filters) My 'straight up and down' look has never been in fashion, apart from on the high fashion runway, but no one really wears that stuff in real life.
lindyloo57 · 23/10/2021 14:43

5ft2, waist is now 30, hips 37, for years my waist was 27/28 hips around 36 , I weigh 9 stone.

mewkins · 23/10/2021 14:44

5ft 8, waist 27 and hips 35. Not sure how much I weigh.
