How/ where can I get a mirror that tells the truth?

ChristmasWithDC · 11/10/2021 00:50

When I put my make up on and do my hair in the morning I think I look ok. But any photos taken of me or any reflections of myself I happen to spot during the course of the day I look completely awful. Like I’m either wearing far too much make up or none at all and I look about a decade older than my lying twat of a mirror tells me I look in the morning.

Is it lighting, possibly? There’s a large window directly behind my make up table but the light isn’t particularly bright in there in the mornings. I want an honest mirror, like the ones I see in the hairdressers where I look like a naked mole rat. If I could see what I look like in real life when I look in the mirror in the morning then I think it would be a lot easier to put my make up on.

Any suggestions?

I’ve just bought a Simplehuman mirror, pricey - and sometimes a bit too honest! -but so worth it especially now the dark mornings are here.

ChristmasWithDC · 11/10/2021 01:06

The Simplehuman one looks good, thanks @SwordfromtheStone. Is it the light it comes with that makes you look more ‘realistic’ or is it the mirror itself?

This has made me laugh - twat of a mirror Grin
I’d rather be deluded than face a harsh mirror every morning.

Me too! I'd never leave the house.

There will always be a difference between the face you bring to your mirror at home, and what a snapshot catches. I have just learned to live with that, and choose to believe that the mirror at home is good enough.

SwordfromtheStone · 11/10/2021 09:40

@ChristmasWithDC it’s both I think, mine is 5x magnification (and came with a mini 10x mirror that you can magnet to the main one) and then there’s the light as well. I’m honestly so happy with it, I’ve bought quite a few cheap light up mirrors but nothing comes close to this 😊

zafferana · 11/10/2021 11:22

Who wants an honest mirror FFS???

I love the mirror my friend has in her hall - it makes me look a good half stone lighter than I am. Every time I see myself in it I tell her I'm going to steal it Grin

nibblits · 11/10/2021 12:45

This has made me laugh..naked mole rat! 😂

It is bloody annoying though, I agree OP..not sure I want to spend actual money on something that depresses me every morning! Think I'll stick to my lying but well intentioned bitch mirror!

Vallmo47 · 11/10/2021 12:48

Paying extra for a new mirror that makes you look like shit?? Thanks OP, this made me laugh today. 😂

AlbertBridge · 11/10/2021 14:58

You just need to turn the dressing table round so that the window is in front of it. Always get ready directly in front of a mirror. You need the straight-talking daylight to really notice all your imperfections.

AlbertBridge · 11/10/2021 14:59

Always get ready directly in front of a mirror. I meant window.

itsmeagainagain · 11/10/2021 15:30

Yes agree with @AlbertBridge do makeup with window in front of you and if you want a real fright get yourself a magnifying mirror to show you all the hairs sprouting out of your face 😆 just pray that nobody has as good vision as my magnifying mirror 😢

YearsSinceISawYou · 11/10/2021 16:15

I use a magnifying mirror when putting on my make up because if it looks ok in there, then it will look ok to everyone.

It is disheartening to see every pore, zit and hair magnified but worth it because I can fix them and the naked truth remains a secret between me and my mirror.

ChristmasWithDC · 11/10/2021 22:00

Thanks for the advice. I’ll try moving my dressing table tonight so it’s poised ready for make up time tomorrow morning. I’m intrigued to see how awful I look. I’m going to allow myself an extra 10 minutes as I’m sure there will be eyebrow hairs and blackheads that window behind me positioning hasn’t revealed. I’m quite looking forward to it.

So - how's it going? Have you decided to work from home forever now? Are you sealing up your bedroom, prepared to die inside? Have you bought a full-body face mask?

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 12/10/2021 08:31

Maybe you're relaxed at home and stressed out when catching glimpses of yourself rushing about, so actually both versions of your reflection are honest...

ChristmasWithDC · 12/10/2021 09:22

Well that was fucking horrifying. It turns out I’m walking around all day looking exactly like my mother 😭

I am never ever going to do this. You are a brave woman, OP.

The naked mole rat comment was inspired. Lol

I love this 😀

Yes !

Next time ( forgive the pun) you buy clothes, go to Next and try on in their fucking horrible three mirrored changing rooms. Those morrors are positioned in such a way to take no prisoners. You will see your horrible self in all it's glory :)
You will never look at yourself admiringly ever again

Coffeepot72 · 12/10/2021 12:29

Mirror mirror on the wall ……

My home make up mirror is my friend, I often leave the house thinking I’ve still got it ……. Only to arrive at work 40 mins later, where the mirror in the ladies loo makes me look like I’ve been exhumed. But who do I believe?

And I always wear extra make up if I’m going to the hairdressers, I totally identify with naked mole rat! 😃

I love those mirrors. My arse is 🔥 shame about the face.

Cattenberg · 12/10/2021 12:42

Never trust your reflection under fluorescent lighting. It makes everyone look awful.

Also, if you put on your makeup using a magnifying mirror, you can easily end up putting too much on. So I just use mine for plucking eyebrows etc.

I keep reminding myself that my reflection in my magnifying mirror is not how other people see me. My phone screen is also surprisingly brutal, even when the phone is turned off.
