Can I use 'rags' (bits of cut up cloth) to perm my hair with a home perm kit or do I need plastic rods?

Plastic rods-I’ve never heard of rags being used
I was taught with rods-rags are for temp curls

Will the perm solution not work with rags? I can't find plastic rods that create the curl I like that rags do

I think rags won't work as it would be impossible to rinse the perm solution out completely and then the water they hold would dilute the neutraliser too much, I used the bendy plastic foam rollers in the 80's to get a loser spiral type perm but the curls fell out very quickly.

Ah thank you, that makes sense. Such a shame
